Chapters

Jazzpunk is separated into several chapters (aka levels), some of which are merely transitions between larger narrative arcs.

Darlington Station

Darlington Station

Darlington Station is the first chapter of the game. This train station serves as an introduction to The Director and Secretary IX, and is where Polyblank receives his first mission. Between missions, Polyblank appears back in the Director's office to get briefed on the next task.

The Soviet Consulate

Soviet Consulate

Polyblank's first mission is to infiltrate the Soviet Consulate and retrieve important information. It is a tall building with a park in front, surrounded by a road and more buildings and alleyways. Polyblank can explore the surrounding areas and interact with the many NPCs filling the area. The first side quests are located here. Which consist of: a) taking a package to the informant in the park (which leads to smuggling a pigeon into the next level by eating it), and b) helping a man in a trenchcoat collect pigeons to make a pie.

The Koi Pond

The Koi Pond

The Koi Pond is a pond full of koi fish in front of a temple, and it serves as a rest point between chapters. Polyblank appears sitting on a bench next to a bag of bread, which the fish will eat. He cannot get up and explore the area, and can only feed the koi. Throwing the bread is also the only way to move onto the next scene.

Ikayaki Alley

Ikayaki Alley

Ikayaki Alley is where the second mission takes place, which is to steal The Cowboy's extremely valuable artificial kidney. While it is a straight path from the beginning to the end of the mission, there are branches of the alley to explore and interact with. There is a staircase leading up to rooftops, offering more places to explore. The area is dark and it's not uncommon to find trash piled into corners or against walls. There are several vending machines to get food and non-food substances from as well as vendors serving things to eat. Side quests include: Burroughs-Chemical Bank Robberry, and the O.W.L wrestling league, which are both minigames.

The Temple

The temple's inside

Similarly to the Koi Pond, the Temple is mostly a pause between chapters and lacks a story. The setting is of a traditional Japanese temple overlooking a lake. A path winds against part of the water, pi-shaped torii (red gates usually marking the entrance to a sacred area) lining a portion of it. Inside the temple, which cannot be left, is a statue (possibly of Buddha), incense, and prayer mats. One incense pot can be lit, after which Polyblank kneels and hits the gong in front of the statue to move on to the next chapter.

The Expedition

After the "heat" the mission at Ikayaki attracted, the Director sends Polyblank on vacation. The Expedition is a world map physically very similar to a real one, with minor tweaks, and acts as a sort of playable cutscene. Many locations can be "visited" on the way to Kai Tak Resort. Notably, this is where Polyblank can clearly view the United Prefectures of Japanada, a large country comprised of North America and Japan. A list of the modified country names can be found here.

Kai Tak Resort

Kai Tak Resort

Kai Tak Resort is where Polyblank is sent for vacation. The resort is home to a four story hotel, a bar, a beach, and two pools (though the rear one is nonfunctional). Polyblank is encouraged to explore the resort, to the point of a beachgoer directly invites him to a party at the beach if he hasn't already gone. Bartenders will offer drinks, usually ones "humans shouldn't consume". Interestingly, most of the staff appear to be cyborgs.

The vacation is cut short, however, when the Director alerts him to the presence of a Syndicate member on site and gives Polyblank a mission. This chapter introduces The Editor.

The Wetworks

The Wetworks

The Wetworks is an escape from the simulation of Jazzpunk's world accessed by cooking the Mechanical Pig. It is wholly a series of platforms and tubes that carry Polyblank between them. Equations and graphs pattern the platforms and float in the air. Symbols, often floating and abstract in shape, make up the bulk of the Wetworks's population. At the very top of the Wetworks is a computer leading back to "meatspace".

Bachelor Pad

Bachelor Pad

After learning of the Director and Secretary's kidnapping, Polyblank appears in the Bachelor Pad to save them. This is where the climax of the story takes place, being the location of the final challenge(s) against the Editor. It is a penthouse suite and extends out to multiple rooftops, each centered around a new sport.

Intestinal Credits

After being eaten by the Director, Polyblank is transported to the Intestinal Credits. It displays the game's credits and ends with the simulation (the game itself) ending.
