Miles ----[1], known professionally as M, is the Head of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS/MI6). The character served as a recurring ally in Dynamite Entertainment's series of James Bond comic books; beginning with their first arc, Vargr, which ran between 4th November 2015 and 6th April 2016.

Biography

Early Life

During the Troubles in Northern Ireland (c. 1969-98), Miles ---- served in the British Army under Major Sammy Wells. During a riot in Belfast, his commanding officer ordered him to take down a suspected IRA informant using supposedly non-lethal plastic bullets. Unbeknownst to the young solider, the round he was provided was intended to be lethal and the target was in fact one of Wells' own informants, who had become a liability. While seemingly killed, the girl was in fact alive; having been secretly saved by undercover MI6 agents and provided a new identity. For years afterwards, Wells continued to blackmail him. At some point Miles joined the Secret Intelligence Service and rose through its ranks to become the Head of the Service by the 2010s.

Vargr & Eidolon

In the mid-2010s, M was engaged in an ongoing political feud over the existence of the SIS's ultra-covert Black Ops unit, the '00' Branch. Simultaneously the agency was coming under increasing pressure from its sister service MI5, whose chief, Sir Stephen Mackmain, was pushing for the continuation of the Hard Rule — legislation preventing SIS personnel from carrying firearms in the United Kingdom. After the death of 008, M reassigned his investigation into continental drug trafficking to 007. The simple operation rapidly expanded into a serious incident involving the manufacture of narcotic "trojan horses" carrying lethal disease payloads. Afterwards, SIS discovered the existence of a SPECTRE stay-behind network code-named, "Eidolon". The network was composed of operatives embedded inside the world's intelligence agencies - including MI5. Their presence unveiled, Eidolon retaliated during a meeting between the Intelligence Services Commissioner and the Heads of the British intelligence services; during which Mackmain took M hostage and was revealed to be a SPECTRE operative. M was liberated by the efforts of 007 and MI5 operative, Eve Sharma.

At some point, M assigned Bond to hunt down and eliminate "Kraken", a radical anti-capitalist who had targeted Britain's newly-upgraded nuclear arsenal. But all was not as it seemed, and Kraken was revealed to be ultranationalist arms magnate, Victoria Hunt. M, Moneypenny and the Minister of Defence were lured to her nuclear reprocessing site in the Outer Hebrides, Black Crannog, and taken captive as hostages. Before she could destroy London with Britain's hijacked nuclear arsenal, 007 eliminated the magnate using her own munitions and rescued M before the entire facility went up in flames.

Solstice

Around Christmas, 007 met with M, who uncharacteristically referred to him by his first name, and offered him an off-the-books assignment to help deal with a personal matter. An ex-FSB agent named Anatoly Zima had wooed an estranged relative of an MI6 employee; strongly implied to be M, himself. Officially they could not touch him, but unofficially M wanted 007 to remove him from the equation before he can use the girl. It is later revealed that the disgraced Zima intended to use the girl (Solstice) to compromise M; ingratiating himself with his former Russian masters. Bond killed the Russian and returned to London. He met M at Trafalgar Square for a debriefing. Thanking Bond, M stared sentimentally at the photo of Solstice as the spy walked away.

M

Knowing M to be head of SIS, Sammy Wells - by now a paramilitary leader in the UVF - attempted to blackmail him into obtaining the details of former inmates belonging to rival organisation, the IRA. Ostensibly interested in enacting justice upon them, he actually intended to sell their details to the highest bidder. After heated early meetings, M agreed to exchange the details at The Dark Hedges near Ballymoney. The SIS Head enacted poetic justice on Wells by finding the IRA informants as requested - and brought them to the rendezvous location. He drove off, leaving the pleading man alone with his enemies.
