"Battles are cruel...? The words of pansies with no strength. You can only curse your own weakness!"

Waldstein (ワレンシュタイン) is an old man with relation to both the Night Blade and Licht Kreis. Initially, he started out as Linne's bodyguard in her search for a means to end her life. Until in Sys:Celes, he and a now former Amnesia member, Enkidu switches sides with Linne's brother, Kuon.

He is one of the twelve characters introduced in the original version of UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH.

Background

Monster of strength, and eternity.

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH

A mysterious old beast, who has lived centuries. With ties to the "Night Blade", he operates by the Princess's side. Speaking of the princess, she has recently taken a somewhat useless high school student under her wing, leaving the beast perplexed. All the while, Wald and his comrades are under attack from a mysterious organization, Amnesia. "The Hollow Night is upon us, and we will settle this", says a high ranking member of said organization. In hopes that he may protect his master, Wald decides to head into the belly of the lion's den, alone. Fulfilling his promise to Linne's brother, Kuon.[2]

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II [Sys:Celes]

Waldstein is a warrior who has lived for centuries.

He guarded Linne along on her journey after Kuon, his best friend, entrusted her to him. After long years, Kuon appeared before Waldstein again to tell him that his duty to protect Linne is over--and to ask him to fight alongside Kuon as he strives to go beyond the Night. Kuon beseeches him to wield his claws for his own sake.

Moved by his friend's admirable words, Waldstein decides to leave Linne and fight for himself... playing his role in the impending conclusion of a 500-year-old conflict.

Appearance

Waldstein appears as a large, heavily-muscled elderly man with thick white hair, thick eyebrows, a full white beard and thick chest hair. He has blood-red eyes that show no pupils or sclera and dark skin. He wears a fluffy collar, aquamarine martial arts training pants with grey fur covering and black boots. He wields massive clawed gauntlets held by metal and belts, which he is rarely seen without.

In his youth, Waldstein was still a rather large man with significantly shorter hair and brown eyes. He wore a white Licht Kreis uniform with the faction's logo embellishing the front. He also wore a long, flowing cape which he removed when heading into battle.

Ten years before the main story, Waldstein used to wear a kimono.

Personality

Having been in countless battles, Waldstein enjoys fighting skilled opponents and is always prepared to accept a challenge. However, he appears to be rather absent-minded as he openly stated to Gordeau that he was serving as a distraction while Linne and Hyde were heading to take down Paradox and wasn't aware of the implications of doing so until Gordeau explained it to him.

Despite Waldstein's hunger for battle, he has a softer and compassionate side to him, especially towards Linne. He is extremely loyal to her, following her orders without question and worrying about her well-being. He also spares Hilda's life to "return the favor" for sparing Linne's.

In his monstrous body, Waldstein consumes roughly thrice the normal amount of food needed for one man, possibly even ten times the normal amount if if so happens to be his favorite food. [3]

Story

Episode: Nighttime Void (虚ろの夜語り)
Several hundred years ago Waldstein worked for the Licht Kreis under the direct orders from their leader - Adelheid. When the Licht Kreis invaded Japan to discover the secrets of EXS, he encountered Kuon on the battlefield. The two fought, with Kuon emerging as the victor. Desperate to fulfil his mission, Waldstein tried with his last remaining strength to break Kuon's vessel, the EXS flowed into Waldstein's body, slowly and painfully turning him into a Void. Ashamed by what he had become, Waldstein tried to take his own life, but found himself unable to move.

Out of respect for his opponent, Kuon desperately tried to stop the changes to Waldstein's body. Vatista, who was witnessing the battle down below, gave Kuon one of her seven wings, which he used to cut through Waldstein, driving most of the EXS out of him. Touched by Kuon's chivalry and thankful for saving his life, Waldstein defected from the Licht Kreis and joined the Night Blade, his final order being that the remaining Licht Kreis withdraw from Japan, this battle would soon go down in history as the "Licht Kreis War".

After that, Waldstein worked for the Night Blade until the organization fell apart. Ever since he has been following Linne and taking care of her at the request of Kuon.

Waldstein's actions inadvertently paved the way towards the discrimination of the male members of the Licht Kreis, which in turn, lead to the founding of Ritter Schild.

Episode: Chained Soul (魂縛の枷鎖)
Waldstein began to travel with Linne for the next five hundred years, as well as searching for her whenever her body gave out. However, the remaining members of the Night Blade began hunting the along the way One eventful night lead to the princess, now going under the alias of Chitose, to encounter a young boy named Seth in the middle of a large field. Waldstein watched from afar while Linne and Seth had a lengthy conversation about the fate of the Princess of The Night Blade. Realizing that their time was short, Waldstein called Linne back so that they could continue on their travels. Sometime later, the two were hunted down and Linne was once again killed, though Waldstein survived the ordeal and eventually tracked down the princess in her newest incarnation.

Episode: Power Beat (強者の鼓動)
Ten years later, Waldstein arrives in the city of Kanzakai together with a now grown-up Linne after hearing various rumors about surging amount of In-Births within the city. The pair camp out in the wilderness outside of the city during the night, and reflect on how times have changed in the modern era and how people's views have also changed on topics such as marriage. While reflecting on the past, Waldstein warns Linne of the dangers of wandering around Kanzakai, which still acts as the home of the Moderate faction of the clan. The two dwell on a few more related topics, such as the Sougetsu Clan and Seth before Linne falls asleep.

The next day, Waldstein and Linne enter Kanzakai, to which the former expresses his annoyance at all of the looks he constantly gets from bewildered civilians, who believe that he is some sort of cosplayer. The two eventually decide to split up so that they can get a better lay of the land. While alone, Waldstein overhears some students discussing the Hollow Night, while it seems to be nothing more than a discussion of rumors, Wald takes an interest in a gathering of sorts that was also brought up by the students.

Waldstein eventually reunites with Linne at a small restaurant near a park, and the two discuss what they found out about what Kanzakai is holding. Linne brings up a faction known as Amnesia, as well as the supposed fate of one of their members - Survivor. Waldstein presumes that the group could have something to do with the gathering that is to occur on the weekend. Linne proposes that they stay at a nearby inn for the week and wait until the weekend to investigate.

The next day, the two make their way to one of the parks that is supposedly going to be where Amnesia's gathering will be held. While they are unable to find anything significant, Linne mentions another small gathering that is only accessible through an underground passageway in order to avoid suspicion. Despite this, the two eventually make their way to a nearby mansion, though they are unable to get a grasp on who exactly is in there. Linne proposes that she infiltrates the mansion while Waldstein investigates the grounds outside. In about thirty minutes, Waldstein circles the building, and finds himself surprised at the lack of any security. Out of boredom, he decides to enter the party himself, and starts to grow suspicious at the lack of any security whatsoever, only coming across a few other party-goers who merely acknowledge his existence.

Waldstein eventually makes his way into the main square of the mansion, where he encounters a large group of people in informal clothing, ranging from clothes similar to what he's wearing, and what seems to be some sort of voodoo priest. Eventually, Waldstein works out that the party consists of In-Births. After some searching, Waldstein comes across an exhausted Linne, and the leader of Amnesia, Hilda. Waldstein shortly intervenes and runs off with Linne on his shoulders.

After getting to safety and making sure that the coast is clear, Waldstein scolds Linne for her carelessness, and only gets more frustrated when he finds out that she was distracted by the food being handed out at the party. After calming down, Waldstein dwells over Hilda and the night-limitless potential she wields in her EXS, as well as the possibility of Kuon working from within the shadows.

Later on, Waldstein reflects on everything that has happened since he and Linne arrived in Kanzakai. Musing over the fact that Hilda wishes to become a Re-Birth, Waldstein ponders over whether or not Kuon plays somewhere into this. Waldstein, deciding that it matters not to him, swears to himself that he will strike down anyone who dares interfere with Linne's wishes, even if it means once again locking blades with Kuon.

Episode: A Reluctant Hero (それでも俺は行くしかないだろ!?)
Sometime later, Waldstein is introduced by Linne to Hyde Kido, a high school student she saved from a Void attack who has awakened to the ability to call forth the legendary sword, the Insulator, the sword capable of truly ending Linne's life. Waldstein and Linne move into Hyde's home and begin training him in how to wield his new powers and how to fight. The day before the monthly Hollow Night is set to begin, Waldstein meets up with Hyde after the latter gets wrapped up with training and expresses interests in the results, offering to fight the boy, to which he declines. Waldstein also expresses his disappointment in the lack of groceries Hyde has been carrying and asks him to go and buy some more.

Arcade Mode (アーケードモード)
In his story, he serves as a distraction while Hyde and Linne infiltrate the Altar. Along the way he encounters Gordeau and accidentally reveals to him what he's doing. Gordeau then explains to Waldstein how doing so can compromise his mission, but chooses to keep quiet about it since he's no longer a part of Amnesia. Later, Waldstein encounters Carmine who is astonished at the former's monstrous size and have a slight banter between them before they fight. Upon reaching the Altar, he sees that Hilda has defeated Linne and Hyde is nowhere to be found. Hilda offers him a place in Amnesia so he can fight whenever he pleases. Waldstein finds the idea interesting and challenges Hilda, stating that he won't follow someone who can't defeat him. Having defeated Hilda, he then prepares to deal the finishing blow, but then realizes that Hilda could've killed Linne when she had the chance and chooses to spare her life as well.

When Linne wakes up she asks Waldstein if he saw Kuon. Waldstein states that he didn't but he did sense his presence. As Linne falls unconscious again from exhaustion in his arm, he contemplates how the Hollow Night seems to be getting stronger and more taxing on Linne. Waldstein then laughs to himself as he still has much to do.
