"All right! The time has come! J.J.! Tempest! We're taking off! Say bye-bye, 'cause we're outta here!"

Uzuki (ウヅキ) is a necromancer and a former member of Amnesia. She goes by the alias of The Black Monger and is usually accompanied by her subordinates J.J. and Tempest.

Having first appeared as a secret cameo in Hilda's original arcade mode story ending, Uzuki made her playable debut in UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes as the first character in the game's season pass.

Background

The Night stalker who witnesses the deaths of all things - the "Black Monger"

Uzuki is every bit as monstrous on the inside as she is elegant on the outside. All she wants to do is play with her bizarre powers and see lots of people suffer. This led her to join Amnesia, which she’d heard was full of interesting people. But when it turned out that the leader of Amnesia was obsessed with gaining further power in order to become a Re-Birth, Uzuki lost interest. The solution was simple: All she had to do was rip things apart until the fun came back. Thus begins her story of rebellion.[1]

Appearance

Uzuki is a young-looking woman with long, pink hair that goes past her feet and strange facial features, such as black pupils with white, hypnotic swirls and thin lips that leave her mouth seemingly locked in a wry smile. She wears a pair of glasses with thick, red rims. As shown in gameplay and her Arcade Mode ending, her eye color can change to red.

Her attire consists of a black corset with white strings and two straps that are connected to a choker and a pair of black pantaloons with two large belts hanging loosely from her waist. She wears long, black gloves that travel up to her upper arms, and high-heel boots. Uzuki's most defining aspect of her wardrobe is a large, black top hat that veers off to the side slightly with a white clip depicting a cartoonish face resembling that of a rabbit adorned just above the brim of the hat. She carries a black umbrella called "Beloa" with a skeletal handle and a handbag she can summon items from, those being a bomb, a poison-filled flask and a rabbit doll.

The hat Uzuki wears is able to emote and talk, as shown in her in-game animations.

Personality

Uzuki is a far cry from the other members of Amnesia, even including Hilda. She often acts cruel and self-absorbed, having absolutely no respect for anyone else but herself and will go to any lengths to achieve her goals. Her train of thought is very simplistic and she mainly acts according to the first gut feeling she has. She despises taking orders from anyone, much preferring to do whatever she wants instead.[3]

Compared to anyone else in Amnesia, Uzuki holds the most disdain towards Hilda, whom she refers to as an "Ignorant wench" (馬鹿女), and will go out of her way to berate her as much as possible.[4]

Unlike how she usually acts, Uzuki has shown a rare moment of kindness when her two subordinates, J.J. and Tempest, wanted to stay with her after she let them go, with her agreeing to let them keep following her.[3]

Story

Episode: Festival Flames (祭りの後火)
While Uzuki herself doesn't make a physical appearance, Chaos briefly refers to promoting new members that they have recently gained, and brings up Uzuki as a notable example. Thanks to Uzuki's EXS abilities, as well as Hilda wanting absolutely nothing to do with her, she quickly earns herself a promotion. She then acted as an Executive within Amnesia.

Episode: Power Beat (強者の鼓動)
Once again, Uzuki doesn't make a physical appearance, but when Waldstein passes through a group of visitors at Amnesia's party, he notices a girl wearing foreign clothes that remind of him of a "magician" or a "witch doctor", which could be referring to her.

Arcade Mode (アーケードモード)
Uzuki makes an appearance at the end of Hilda's Arcade Story only if the player has scored two-hundred-million points. She briefly appears alongside Enkidu when Hilda asks someone to dispose of Hyde and Linne, and she makes her dislike for Hilda very clear.

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II: [Sys:Celes]
As an act of rebellion, Uzuki quits Amnesia at last. J.J. asks her if she is sure of her decision, to which she replies that it's her one and only chance to revolt. Uzuki then sends Tempest and him to cause havoc and then wait for her at the Abyss.

Uzuki's first encounter is with Vatista, who evaluated her to be a Maximum-level threat, then asked if she is a Void or a human. Uzuki was upset at the question, being confused that such a "Puny little thing" would be able to detect her true nature. Vatista asks that since her appearance confused Uzuki and her manners aren't Void-like at all, if she could consider Uzuki to be a human. Uzuki only gets more upset at Vatista's interrogation and says that her power is way closer to FLS, causing Vatista to decide to monitor Uzuki. As Uzuki was uncooperative in explaining the origin of her ability, Vatista initiated a fight between them both in order to evaluate her true nature. Right before the bout began, Uzuki called out Vatista for being an abnormal individual calling another "abnormal", which she doesn't deny.

Up next, Uzuki arrives at a new location. Having Sensed that Paradox is near, she calls out her name. Hilda then appeared, saying that Uzuki kept her waiting. Hilda teased Uzuki, saying that she always loved her eyes to which Uzuki responds by declaring that she only has eyes for women who have their heads screwed on straight. Attempting to find common ground between them both, Hilda says that they both lost something, which Uzuki brushes off once more. Like Vatista before her, Hilda questioned Uzuki about her true nature; once more to no clear answer and only a passing comment about how the story is embarrassing and not worth sharing. Uzuki proclaimed that if Hilda wants to know about her that badly, then the words will have to be forced out of her. The two then initiated a fight.

Upon Uzuki's arrival at the Abyss, the Altar of Eternity, Kuon was surprised by her appearing in front of him, for he had expected to fight Paradox in her place. Uzuki says that while she's always been the "bad guy", she's been meaning to save the world once in a while. Kuon responds with an assessment of Uzuki's power; one he decides is enough to play the hero, but leaves her at the brink of losing her humanity due to it consuming her. Though, Uzuki debunks his hypothesis by stating that she has long allied herself with this power after it had consumed her whole. After Kuon voiced his lack of regrets, a fight ending in his death began.

After Uzuki has killed Kuon, J.J. and Tempest arrive, with the former congratulating his boss and applauding her for the beautiful fight he had just witnessed. Due to the world being saved now, Uzuki deems the rebellion to be over and dismisses her subordinates. Though after they asked her to stay with them, she agrees and leads the charge into the first district of hell.

Abilities

Uzuki's ability is the EXS of Ghostly Husks: Necromance (幽骸のEXS『ネクロマンス』), which gives her an ability to manifest objects and beings themed after supernatural entities, or more specifically, the undead, as well as slight manipulation over the movement of her hair. These objects include things such as large bone formations, and specters in the shape of skeletal bats wreathed in pink flames. It also gives Uzuki some degree of shapeshifting capabilities, such as being able to alter the size of her sentient hat and turn herself into a puddle to avoid attacks. Necromance is said to be very useful in larger-scale battles and Uzuki is usually called upon during them because of this. In battle, Uzuki fights with a black, sharp-tipped umbrella dubbed Beloa (ベロア).

According to Vatista, Uzuki's EXS is abnormal, and akin to the FLS energy used by Voids.[3]

Creation & Development

In a Q&A held on the website Twitter, it was stated that Uzuki's design was influenced by Seiichi Yoshihara getting into Goth-punk fashion and developing strong interest in that style of dress at the time of her creation. Additionally, Yoshihara mentioned his love of Capcom's Darkstalkers series and wanted to bring its essence into UNI in her gameplay and visuals[5].

Introduction Text

She was running out of patience. I'm bored. Can't you find
anything interesting? More violence.
More blood. Flesh. Bones. Everything is lovely. The world is
created by life. The merchant who sprinkles death tells
us. The time left to me is not long.

Trivia

  • Uzuki (卯月) is the traditional Japanese name for the fourth month in the Gregorian calendar, April. Four is also a traditional number of bad luck in Japan. April is sometimes referred to as the "Month of Death", which ties to Uzuki's visual theme as The Undertaker as well as her ability, Necromance.
  • Uzuki shares her voice actor, Satomi Akesaka with Eltnum.
    • Additionally, Uzuki was given a win quote against Eltnum to further reference that fact, with her commenting that Eltnum's voice gets on her nerves.
  • Uzuki is the only voiced character in the original UNI and its revisions to not be listed in the credits. In [Sys:Celes]'s credits, she is present.
  • The rabbit Uzuki can summon with her "Bag of Secrets" move was previously featured in the 2020 Valentine's Day artwork. According to its accompanying concept sketch, the rabbit's name is Usa-Bone.
  • Before becoming a member of the roster in [Sys:Celes], Uzuki was the only non-playable character who has both made a physical appearance and talk in the past that doesn't appear in Chronicle Mode, only getting a few offhand mentions.
  • Despite only appearing in Hilda's UNI Arcade ending if certain conditions are met, Uzuki's dialogue portrait will always be unlocked in the gallery no matter if the player has scored the amount of points necessary to trigger the ending or not.
  • Previously, at time when the Season Pass of [Sys:Celes] was announced, Uzuki was originally scheduled to be released on August 2024, before her release date was instead changed to one month early on July 25th, 2024.[6]
