DJ

DJ is a character in the television series Hoops voiced by Steve Berg. He is a high school student and a member of the school's basketball team, the Lenwood Colts.

Appearance

DJ is rather chubby and sports spiky hair of orange-and-yellow coloring held together by a blue hair-band. He wears glasses with a red-and-orange tint.

Character

DJ has an uncanny ability to imitate the voices of other people. He regularly overeats and indulges in unhealthy food, but does not seem to care how would affect his performance on the basketball team, nor what others think of him.

Plot summary

Ethics

DJ aids in the plot to lure Lonnie Seymour away from his home and into attending a performance by Opal Lowry by imitating Opal's voice. He later reveals this to Seymour himself, causing him to fail Seymour's ethics exam.

The Sponsor

Ben Hopkins presents DJ as being "fat trash in marinara sauce" as an example of why the Lenwood Colts should be given a bigger budget. Later, when the team commiserates about their awful fathers, DJ complains about his own father, saying that he always criticizes his choices. He later volunteers to take the game-winning shot at an important game, but is passed over in favor of Matty. Once the game is won, he and Isaac douse Hopkins in hot tea, telling him that they panicked and couldn't find any Gatorade.

Matty Gets a Girlfriend

After Ben Hopkins tells the team that it is mandatory for them to get girlfriends, DJ helps the team in stealing his aunt's flower van, which they proceed to turn into a "Bang Bus."

The Strike

When the teachers of Lenwood High School go on strike, DJ leads the team in sneaking into back into the school to roam its hallways, doing as they please.

Death

Annoyed at having to attend a memorial for Coach Lamonte, whom nobody liked, DJ asks Hopkins why they have to be there. Hopkins tries to talk up Lamonte before admitting that he was "kind of an asshole." When DJ replies that that's kind of like him, he orders DJ to run a lap, despite it being a funeral. Later, DJ, Timebomb and Matty attend a counseling session with Dr. Brooks, but they leave at the bell, admitting that they only came to the session to get out of last period.

The Road Game

When the team attends a prestigious invitational in Cincinnati, DJ leads the team in trying to hit up cheerleaders. He has them clean up a pool to host a pool party, but the industrial grade chemicals they use leave everyone with severe chemical burns, forcing the remainder of the event to be canceled.

The Scout

Before skipping town to become an assistant coach at Henderson Prep, Hopkins provides DJ, Timebomb, Isaac and Marcus "gifts" out of the trunk of his car. He gives DJ a pocketknife and after he leaves, DJ agrees with the others that he's an awful person.

Quotes

  • "Mayonnaise and bacon on both sides of the bread? I thought that was a trick that only fat families knew about." - DJ to Matty's mother, Crystal Atkins, "My Two Dads"
