Padrius Encilion (페이드리우스 엔실리온), also known as Bishop (비숍) and God of the Seas (해신 (海神), is an extremely powerful Gift user and a member of the Elders, the nine strongest Gift users in the world.

He is the founder and district lord of Cloud Garden but was once an aristocrat of high society that gained a fearsome reputation for his shrewdness and power centuries ago. He is also the younger brother of Narkle Encilion, a powerful Gift user and member of the Hero Clan's The Council.[2]

In the Age of Heroes and Villains, he is a high-ranking member of the Hero Clan and the leader of his own faction within the clan that's currently engage in a civil war with its founder, the Master of the Clan.

Bishop was introduced in the Hero Candidate Arc as a major supporting character overseeing the Hero Trials.

Appearance

Bishop has a very youthful and handsome appearance of a young man which betrays his centuries-old age. He has rough and unkept blackish-gray hair with a small lock of hair in a ponytail by each of his ears and deep black eyes that turn into a vibrant blue when using his Gift.

He wears a fancy, gold, silk-like robe that covers a dark grey gold-laced uniform and is also seen holding a top gold-colored cane with his Elder's symbol split in halves on it.

Personality

Bishop's Cunning

Bishop is a polite and elegant man with a cheerful attitude and a positive personality and friend. Despite his seemingly jolly exterior, he is an extremely dangerous man who will go to great lengths to accomplish his goals.

He is shown to be cunning, manipulative, and an extremely intelligent man but was much more "rougher and straight to the point" in his youth according to Victoria, something Bishop has confirmed it himself by calling it his "sensitive past." In his younger days, he used to openly display it with a sinister-looking demeanor and ruthlessness having once wiped out an entire group of opponents that ended with him sitting on top their bodies.

Bishop's Hidden Side

Philip Neville, a reporter, was constantly in fear around Bishop despite his politeness and friendliness, implying the fierceness of his dangerous behavior that he separates from his public image.

However, Bishop has shown himself to be a deeply wise man with a pragmatic perspective on life, particularly on balance and the wider fascinations of life believing that he is unable to understand the common man's thinking due to the difference in lifespans and power as an Elder.

History

Bishop in the Chaotic Era

Padrius was born over a thousand years ago during the Chaotic Era. Alongside his older brother, Narklaus Encilion, he was raised in a nomadic tribe, and together they became revered as gods for their immense power—Narklaus, the God of Lightning, who could strike down nearly any warrior with his thunderbolts, and Padrius, the God of the Sea, who could drown his enemies beneath the might of his ocean. They spent their days sparring with each other and killing enemies they encountered as they travelled.

One day, they discovered the Pillars Cloud, three massive stone columns believed by ancient peoples to be fallen clouds from the sky. Enchanted by the site, they chose to settle there and founded a city, which they named Cloud Garden. In order to not confuse their followers, Padrius took on a smaller role as the Bishop of Cloud Garden while Narkle became their king. Bishop planned to turn Narkle into a genuine God and came up with a plan to do so, while Narkle blindly trusted him.

Their city flourished, and every step followed Bishop’s vision to perfection, something that slowly began to unsettle Narkle. Though he never voiced it, the precision and success of his brother's plans made him feel overshadowed, even inferior. That feeling eventually turned to envy when a great drought struck the world, starving and killing countless, everywhere except Cloud Garden. Bishop and his command over water, shielded their city by blessing their followers with rainfall. In gratitude, the people awarded him an Elder Star, marking him as one of the stars of the era.

As time passed, a new threat emerged. Raiders from Rhodos, led by one of the Elders, Victoria and her pirate crew, made their way toward Cloud Garden after plundering YS Harbor. Narkle, as King, intercepted them en route and challenged Victoria to a duel. But he was outmatched and suffered a devastating defeat—a moment that, in the eyes of many, confirmed Bishop’s superiority, as he alone was able to drive Victoria away.

Eventually, Padrius left Cloud Garden to journey alone, having sensed the growing fear his older brother held for him. He travelled the world and attended his first Elder summit where he encountered the others Elders of which Reagan Sinclair and a Red haired woman struck the biggest impression on him. Eventually Padrius crossed paths with the godlike, Steel Witch, which led him to believe that a doomed future was coming. Convinced that the only path forward was through drastic action, Bishop devised a plan to destroy the Steel Witch, no matter the cost. He was willing to sacrifice countless lives to see it through.

To force Narkle to evolve by breaking his emotional ties, Bishop murdered Narkle's wife and closest allies. The act enraged Narkle, igniting a furious battle between the brothers. Though the details remain uncertain, it’s believed Narkle was defeated and forced to leave. In his absence, Bishop seized control of Cloud Garden. Afterwards it's assumed that he met Sledgehammer, the district lord of YS Harbor, who would come under Bishop's service as his right-hand arm.

At some point, Victoria challenged Padrius once again, but the result of their clash is unknown.[3] He also met Prim Anville, the Fiend of the Southern Continent who was infamous for killing the greatest number of people in history, and the two became good friends.

Bishop in the Era of the Lords

Bishop's activities aren't fully known in the Era of the Lords, but he once encountered a young woman and Gift User who would one day become the hero, Terror Knight. This encounter was less than ideal for her as she developed a deep and profound fear of the Elder afterwards.[4]

Bishop in the Era of Nera

In beginning of the era of Nera, Bishop and the other Elders choose to ignore The King of Nera's rise to power with The Torch and his conquest against the district lords.[5] During the height of the War of Inheritance, Bishop's hometown of Cloud Garden was once taken over and conquered by Engen, a young Gift user and leading heir in the war. Bishop would take an interest in the young man as he came to know about Engen's prowess.

Towards the end of the War of Inheritance, Bishop likely encountered and met The Steel Witch possibly around or before her attack on Engen's coronation as the second king of Nera and her destroying The Torch. He became convinced of her immense godly-like power and vowed to defeat her like his fellow Elders, Victoria and Milen Kula.

Around the time of the Skysword declaring war against the remaining forces of Nera and the start of the War of the Reeds, Bishop joined the newest Elder's organization, the Hero Clan. It is presumed that he fought in the Great War, but it's not fully known if he took part in battles.

Story

Hero Candidate Arc

Bishop is peacefully asleep in his mansion when Madame Fullmoon comes in to tell him about the hijacking of the Victoria Express while her assistant tries to calm her down.

The Torch Arc

Bishop leaves Cloud Garden for good following the battle with Engen. While many were debating, Fullmoon regains control over the District and assumes his duties as the District Lord but things are doubtful as sources and area spread out too thin and it would take too long to rebuild the damages as Bishop counted on.

With these developments, a few of the District Managers in the clan start declaring their support for him for the future civil war.

Etymology

  • Padrius might be related to the Gaelic name Padraig, which is the Irish form of Patrick, meaning "noble" or "of noble birth."
  • Encilion could be a form of the Welsh word "enciliad," meaning "retreat" or "withdrawal," suggesting qualities of introspection or solitude which could imply something more abstract, like a "gathering of retreats" or "wisdom of withdrawal."
  • Padrius Encilion might thus combine the ideas of "noble father" (Padrius) with "withdrawal" or "retreat" (Encilion), suggesting a name that evokes themes of noble leadership balanced with introspective wisdom or solitude.

Trivia

  • Whenever he plays chess, Bishop frequently plays with his eyes shut or with many players at the same time.
  • Bishop and Engen share the same birthday, though there is a significant age gap between them.[6]
  • Bishop's brother Narkle Encilion was referred to as "Lord" by Dalia Mendoza indicating that the brothers may come from royalty or nobility.
  • He shares the same goals as his fellow Elders, Engen, Victoria, and Milen Kula. That is to kill and defeat the Steel Witch.
