Zelena Mills,formerly known as the Wicked Witch of the West, cursed as Kelly West, is a major antagonist turned anti-heroine in the ABC television series Once Upon a Time.
Zelena is the firstborn daughter of Cora and the maternal half-sister of Regina. Initially envious of her sister, she tried finding ways to ruin Regina's life. However, Zelena later reformed after remembering their brief friendship as children. She is the main antagonist in the second half of Season 3, the secondary antagonist of Season 4, the secondary antagonist-turned-anti-hero of Season 5 as well as one of the main antagonists in the first half of the flashback timeline in Season 5 (along with King Arthur), a major antagonist-turned-major anti-hero in Season 6, and a supporting protagonist in Season 7.
Zelena is based on Wicked Witch of the West from the children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. She also takes the place of the stepmother from the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel and an allusion to both Persephone of Greek Myth and the Enchantress from the Disney film Beauty and the Beast.
She was portrayed by Rebecca Mader as an adult, who also portrayed Charlotte Lewis in Lost and Isabella Blake-Thomas as a teenager.

Powers
- Dark Magic: Being the daughter of Cora, a very powerful witch, Zelena inherited her mother’s magical abilities, having exhibited them since she was an infant. Due to her abusive adoptive father, Zelena rarely performed it. With training from Rumplestiltdkin, she became one of the most powerful and dangerous magic Users. During season 6, Zelena used the Crimson Heart to remove her magic after being tricked by the Black Fairy into infecting the diamonds in the Storybrooke mines. However, Zelena was able to restore her magic with the Resurrection Amulet (which had absorbed her daughter, Robin’s magic, earlier.
- Conjuration - Zelena can conjure objects out of the blue. She created a cloth out of thin air when she accidentally cut her father's chin while shaving his beard.
- Energy Blasts - Ability to create magical blasts to harm the enemies and the objects in the most effective way.
- Healing Spells - Ability to magically heal injuries and leaving no visible mark. When she first met Regina as a child, Zelena knew how to immediately heal her without Cora's guidence. However, if a person is harmed by Zelena's magic, she cannot heal them. When she accidentally scarred Robin while escaping Robin and Regina in the Underworld, Zelena tried healing her, but to no avail.
- Heart-ripping - Zelena has the ability to steal someone's heart with her magic, and can either kill her victims or control them.
- Locator Spells - Ability to cast a spell that will aid in finding something or someone.
- Magical Immobilization - Zelena can use her magic to immobilize a person or individual.
- Mirror Enchantments - Though not as much as her sister, Zelena is able to look through or travel through mirrors to spy on her enemies. She used the ability to spy on her sister's lessons with Rumplestiltskin and showing Ruby with a mirror displaying Dorothy.
- Protection Spells - Ability to magically protect a location, an item or a person through various ways.
- Pyrokinesis - Zelena is able to conjure green fireballs she uses on her enemies.
- Shapeshifting - Ability to alter the appearance of oneself or others. Zelena transformed innocent people into flying monkeys, which gives her complete power and command over them.
- Telekinesis - Zelena can telekinetically move objects or people.
- Teleportation -With her magic, Zelena can magically transport herself and other individuals with her powers.
- Potioncraft - Ability to create liquid substances for various purposes by combining a set of ingredients.
- True Love - Ability to kiss one's True Love and break a curse. Zelena and Hades' kiss restarted his heart and allowed him to leave the Underworld.
- Control Over Flying Monkeys: Zelena has complete control over the people she transformed into flying monkeys. They follow her every command without hesitation.
Weaknesses
- Laws of Magic: Like every magic user, Zelena's magic is not limitless. She cannot force people to fall in love, travel through time or bring people from the dead. However, time travel can be accomplished through symbolism: a symbol of innocence, courage, heart and brains.
- Light Magic: This form of magic is one of Zelena's greatest weaknesses, and according to Glinda, the only thing capable of defeating her. This is proven true when Regina successfully uses light magic and manages to defeat her sister.
- Pendant Loss (formerly): After becoming the Witch of the West, Zelena's powers were tied to a green pendant. If it is remove, it renders her powerless, which is what Regina did after defeating her. However, Zelena's soul managed to leave her body when Mr. Gold stabbed her. She successfully activated her time travel spell, which sent her, Emma and Killian back in time before Snow and Charming met. However, after this, Zelena is able to use magic without her pendant, rendering it as a weakness no more.
- Crimson Heart: The heart-shapped object is able to absorb a user's magic apparently permanently. Zelena voluntarily gave up her powers when her dark magic infected the diamonds the Black Fairy needed to make can fairy dust in order to cast her dark spell and initiate the Final Battle.
Trivia
- Zelena's name means "green' in various Slavic languages, referring to how the Wicked Witch of the West is commonly adapted with green skin. Her cursed identity, Kelly, is a reference of the color Kelly green and was one of the potential baby names she mentions to Robin and Regina in "Swan Song." Her last name is a reference to her former identity at the Wicked Witch of the West.
- According to Hades, Zelena's birthday is April 15.
- There are at least seven different shades of green are used for Rebecca Mader's make-up.
- The Sleeping Curse was the last villainous act Zelena committed against anyone in Oz.
- Zelena is only green when her envy flares. Finding peace as a mother and being part of her maternal/adoptive family helped calm Zelena.
- Her Kelly West persona was a health nut who ate disgusting food, at least to Zelena after her memories were woken up by Regina; she notably stuck out her tongue at the memory, as if trying to get a bad aftertaste out.
