Vulcan Joseph

There is another way! I'm gonna build my own generator, one better than Amaterasu and no one has to die!!
~ Vulcan to Gureo Haijima.

Vulcan Joseph is one of the main supporting protagonists of Fire Force. He is the engineer of the main protagonistic faction Special Fire Force Company 8, and the benefactor of Lisa Isaribi. Vulcan has a reputation for his unrivaled talent for engineering and hatred of Haijima Industries. Later reveals his interest in saving the animals and proudly wears and creates stuff with animal motifs. He hated the Fire Force for being a subsidiary of Haijima, but joined with Company 8 after they protected him from Haijima. Working with Company 8 has allowed Vulcan the chance to save Lisa Isaribi from the abuse suffered at the hands of the White-Clad, saving her and later working with her as a teammate.

Vulcan is voiced by Taku Yashiro in the Japanese version and by Jason Liebrecht in English.

Appearance

Vulcan is a young man of average height and atheltic build, with short red hair and cyan eyes. When working, he wears an eerie-looking goat skull with twisted horns and goggles. He often wears T-shirts with animal themes, including his black T-shirt with a white paw print. Another T-shirt he's worn is a white one with black outlines that says "THE ANIMALS" and has a black paw print underneath. He has striped tattoos over his body, from two black stripes around his neck, three black horizontal stripes on his shoulders, two on his upper-arms, and one stripe on his left forearm.

Personality

Amaterasu can only generate enough power for the empire's people. So I wanna create a new energy source, something even stronger, that can bring the whole world back. And I'll bring all of the animals who went extinct, back to life with it. That's the dream I'm fighting for.
~ Vulcan to Shinra, Arthur, and Iris, at the end of his virtual tour lecture about animals.

Vulcan is a man insistent on saving all forms of life, willing to save as many innocent lives as he can, while dreaming to save all the world's animals. He was insistent enough to keep trying to save Lisa even after she betrayed him, believing that she is still good despite her allegiance. He has a deep-rooted hatred of Haijima Industries due to experiencing how corrupt they are. Since the Fire Force is a subsidiary of Haijima, he refuses to accept them and has a strong desire to remain independent. He throws cans at Shinra and Arthur because of his paranoia of Fire Force Soldiers, but avoided hitting Iris since he seemingly would never hit a girl. Seeing their casual nature was enough to make him less hostile towards them and show them a virtual tour about the beauty and tragedy of animals and how his dream was to save them, but told them that he would never join them no matter what they say, and that he would find his own way, showing that he is rather stubborn.

He chooses to be good over lawful when he joins Special Fire Force Company 8 for protecting him from Haijima, and has since accepted them as good people. Vulcan is as loyal as he is stubborn, always choosing to help them by going on missions with them even when extremely dangerous out of free will. When determined, he is unyielding to the point of stubbornness. His goal is to build a power plant that surpasses Amaterasu that doesn't need a human power source, unlike the First Pillar and the Woman in Black having to suffer, that will also save the animals like the Woman in Black.

Vulcan is extremely passionate about engineering. This is made obvious form his symbolic name, appearance, reputation, residence full of mechanical parts, and idiosyncratic talent of engineering. He has high standards for everything that he builds, smashing his inventions as hard as he can to make sure they are sturdy enough to be as reliable as possible since important things cannot be allowed to break. He believes that machines are tools and that faith in people and animals is more empowering than praying on a machine to work. He states this when him and Maki state their trust in each other being the reason they beat The Puppeteer. Vulcan is renowned for his intelligence, which he puts to good use by building useful inventions for Company 8. He is skilled enough with words and awareness to manipulate Arthur's delusion of being a knight to put his pyrokinetic powers to good use.
