Sharon Watts is a fictional character and central protagonist of the BBC British soap opera EastEnders.

The character is portrayed by Letitia Dean.

Biography

Sharon Watts is a resident of Albert Square, the market town of fictional East London borough Walford, who was adopted by The Watts family prior to the show's introduction in 1985.

Ever since the show's very first episode, Sharon had represented some of the show's biggest and most highly-prolific storylines to date. These included coping with her adopted parents' marriage crisis; grieving for the apparent death of her adopted father Den Watts after he was shot in a canal from 1989; a long-running companionship with her best-friend Michelle Fowler that was briefly threatened after Sharon finds out that Michelle had a one-night stand with Den and that he got her pregnant with Sharon's half-sister Vicki Fowler; a problematic marriage with her first husband Grant Mitchell; an affair with Grant's brother Phil Mitchell in a titular plotline, dubbed "Sharongate", that is considered one of soaps' finest storylines of all-time; and eventually leaving the square in 1995 after selling her ownership of The Queen Victoria public house to the Mitchell Brothers.

In 2001, Sharon returned for a second stint. Her storylines included reconciling with Phil Mitchell until it transpired that she had aborted Grant's baby during her time away in 1995-2001; a longstanding feud with the Mitchell Brothers' fiesty mother Peggy Mitchell; coping with the sudden death of her adopted mother Angie Watts; a short-lived engagement to local firefighter Tom Banks after he gets killed in a house fire explosion; reuniting with Vicki and their father after it transpires that Den Watts is alive; embarking on a passionate romance with her adopted half-brother Dennis Rickman and later marrying him on the day they discover that Den Watts was murdered; helping Peggy and her sons exonerate her daughter Sam Mitchell for the murder of Den Watts and bringing the real killer, his widow Chrissie Watts, to justice; getting pregnant with Dennis' child; and moving to America following Dennis' murder by gangster Danny Moon under the orders of crime boss Johnny Allen.

In 2012, Sharon resurfaced for a third and ongoing stint. Said plotlines mainly revolved on her relationship with Phil, in which the pair eventually got married despite Sharon's brief engagement with his love rival Jack Branning whilst earlier on Phil had a failed wedding with his ex-fiancé Shirley Carter. However, the marriage eventually broke down when Sharon cheats on Phil by having a tryst with his young employee Keanu Taylor in a storyline dubbed "Sheanu". The plot ended with the death of Sharon's son Denny Mitchell on the same day she gives birth to her and Keanu's child named Albie during the show's 35th anniversary week of episodes. She later married her longtime friend Ian Beale in a plot to kill him for discovering that Ian was responsible for Denny's death. Thereafter Sharon reconciled with Keanu following his return to the square and they got engaged to the point of being due to get married on Christmas Day 2023, only for her to end up jilting Keanu after learning that he had Albie kidnapped to stop her from leaving the square with him months ago before later revealing to both him and Phil the truth about Albie's parentage - Keanu was never the father, Phil was all along. This revelation ultimately led to the events of Keanu's death when he confronted and then strangled her in a fit of rage, which resulted in Keanu being stabbed to death by Sharon's closest companion Linda Carter in the end.
