Hero Overview

Charlie Stein is the main protagonist of the science-fiction thriller manga and anime series The Darwin Incident. He is the famous "humanzee" (a human-chimpanzee hybrid) teenager named Charlie who was given birth by a chimpanzee who was rescued from an animal testing lab during her pregnancy. At a young age, he is adopted by the Stein couple who raised him like a normal boy and is given privilege to go to high school, hoping to live a normal life like a human, where he befriends with a girl named Lucy Eldred.

Appearance

Despite being a human-chimpanzee hybrid, most of Charlie's traits are those of a monkey, only having paler skin than normal monkeys, less fur around his body, especially his face. The monkey features of his body includes large ears and hand-like fingers for toes and wider legs. Like most monkeys, his spine is a bit curved unlike humans, making his head tilt forward at all time. Due to being raised in a normal family, Charlie wears casual clothes as a high school student, often wearing hoodie.

Personality

Why does everyone think I'm something more than just me? I don't speak for anyone. I'm just one animal. Just Charlie
~ Charlie's response to Gare

Charlie carries an indifferent and emotioneless atittude, often being depicted as quiet whether it is at school or home. Despite this he can be caring of those around him. Charlie can be seen as collected and an easy-going individual who does not seem to be too bothered by most commotions occuring around him until they escalate. Otherwise, he often yawns to show his lack of interest. Regardless of not being a half-human, Charlie can talk extremely well and even at a some intellectual level. He can appear as observant as seen by his superhuman abilities as a monkey reacting to intruders the moment they stepped into his house, when Lucy fell off a tree, or when he pointed to one of the terrorists to not use the gun that he had behind his back. His cold and emotioneless attitude also goes along with a detached choice of words, such as him claiming that he would have no hesitation to kill a classmate if they are infected by the deadly for his own survival. Despite having no emotion or no sense of humor, Charlie's words frequently cause Lucy to burst in laughs.

Some signs of cleverness and curiosity of Charlie can be shown by his frequent questioning of the society and human nature, particularly to Lucy. This habit has also shown to frustrate Lucy. When Gare addressed to his frustration as to why Charlie did not pay attention to his display of animal rights, he simplies replies that he is willing to speak to anyone as a mere animal. Despite desire to live a normal life, Charlie would go as far as to take down the terroristic group known ALA on his own, unfazed. Charlie's love for his parents meant more to him than anything, as shown by his action of rushing to his parents' house to rescue them, not caring that it was on fire. In the last few hours of her biological mother Eva's death, Charlie points out that he considers Hanna, his early adoptive mother as his real mother as she had true connections with him unlike Eva.
