Bait

Bait is a major protagonist in the Netflix TV Show The Dragon Prince. He is the glow toad pet companion, and best friend Ezran, who helps him in his quest to get Azymondias back to his mother. Despite his grumpy exterior, Bait is a caring and empathetic nature and is willing to risk his life to protect others.

In the Netflix's opening of the show, his vocal sound effects were provided by Aaron Ehasz.

Biography

Backstory

During Ezran's chidhood, his father Harrow gave Bait to him, due to Ezran spending more time with animals as he had dificulty to make friends with other humans. He would sometimes play games with Ezran and even Harrow, an example of this is when Bait put himself in Harrow's head when he and Ezran were playing Hide and Seek.

Bait would also help him in stealing jelly tarts from Katolis' baker Barius, with him getting them easily due to him using his quick and long tongue to get the jelly tarts. One day years before the events of the series, Ezran and Callum ended up going to the town of Noct, with Ezran bringing Bait. There, they discovered that the people of the town were falling asleep and weren't waking up, so they decided to investigate.

This ended with them finding out that the Dream Warden, a creature able to get inside people's dreams, was causing all of this, so Ezran calmed them down and convinced them to find new friends through the dream's of other children, saving the town of Noct and making every adult in there wake up from their sleep.

The Dragon Prince

When Callum lied to Rayla about him being Ezran to protect the latter, Ezran and Bait appeared and after understanding that Rayla was trying to hurt Callum, Bait used his glow to temporarily blind Rayla so Callum and Ezran could escape.

Bait would help in bringing the egg of the Dragon Prince back to his mother in Xadia to bring peace between humans, elves, and dragons. He would also rescue Rayla from Amaya's soldiers after she had Rayla imprisoned and interogated after she mistakingly thought she did something wrong to Callum and Ezran.

Bait would also start to have a softer side towards other people, such as Callum, and despite originaly being jeallous over Azymondias for his relationship with Ezran and being afraid he might replace him as his companion, Bait would protect Azymondias, such as taking a hit to protect him from Viren.

During Team Zym's second time in the Moon Nexus, Bait almost ate Phoe-Phoe's feather, although Ezran and Callum stopped him before he could. He is later seen helping in creating the portal that Rayla and Callum were going to use to see if Viren was dead or not.

One day, he was eating jelly tarts with Azymondias and Ezran, and when Ezran looked at his father's sword and wondered if what it meant, as it could mean his father's crimes, such as him hurting other people for the best for his kingdom.

Bait and Azymondias comfort Ezran and tell him to ask a metalsmith to mealt the sword and turn it into his new crown, with Ezran agreeing, as he understood that he could use the sword for another type of symbolism, and a more peaceful one, with him believing that it would mean that he still would have a small part of his father with him.

Months later, there was a meeting where Bait took part in, as Ezran saw Bait as a member of the council due to how important he was to him. Bait would also later appear in Callum's birthday party, and informed Ezran about Callum being in the balcony of Ezran's room, where Ezran would go to comfort Callum after this, as he was sad because he saw his birthday as a reminder of the day Rayla left him.

Bait would also go to help in trying to stop Aaravos, and alongside the rest of Team Zym, he went to Umber Tor to find Rex Igneous, and he would blind the leader of the Drakeriders when he tried to capture Azymondias, and was nearly killed by creatures when going to see Rex.

Bait also saves his friends by pushing the gate that lead them out of Umber Tor, and they hugged each other after they were safe from Rex Igneous, who tried to kill them. Bait would later stay with Rayla and Callum in Katolis while the rest of the group went to find a way to find Aaravos' prison. However, they would later decide to go to the Bookery of Lux Aurea to discover any weaknesses on Aaravos.

There, they out about the existence of the Novablade, a weapon that could kill Aaravos, and are saved by Zubeia, the rest of Team Zym and Corvus from banthers that were infected by the corruption of the Sunforge. The team would later go to find Archmage Akiyu after there was a vote on wheter to find Akiyu so she could tell them about the location of Aaravos' prison, or get the Novablade and wait for Aaravos to be freed so they could kill him, with the former being decided, and Akiyu would give them the location to the prison and an amulet that would make Callum and the others breathe underwater.

Because Zubeia was unable to help Team Zym due to her injuries caused by a corrupted banther at the Bookery of Lux Aurea, the group went to the town of Scumport to get a boat, where they would find Villads who would help them get to Aaravos' prison at the Sea of the Castout. However, before they left, the crew stole a box from the leader of Scumport Finnegrin, which contained baby glow toads that Finnegrin was going to use to capture sea leviathans.

Because of this, Finnegrin went after Team Zym, and while they tried to escape from his ship, Finnegrin was able to capture them, and at one point Finnegrin used Bait to attract a sea leviathan that would eat Rayla out of spite for Callum punching him, but are later freed after Soren convinced Finnegrin's bodyguard Elmer to stand up to Finnegrin. The group would then defeat Claudia and get a pearl that had Aaravos' prison, with Claudia losing her leg to Rayla during her fight with Team Zym.

After this, Team Zym returned to Katolis to and revealed to Opeli and Barius about Aaravos' pearl, with their meeting leading to Ezran deciding to keep the pearl hidden in Katolis as any other decision would be too risky. However, Callum decided to go with Rayla to the Starscraper and meet the Celestial Elves, as they were seemingly the ones who had the Novablade and thus were the more likely to know how to kill or at the very least prevent Aaravos from being released.

After Callum and Rayla left, Viren appeared in Katolis, with Ezran having him arrested in the castle's dungeon, and while he was reluctant to leave before fully dealing with Viren, he ended up being convinced by Soren to go to Amaya and Janai's wedding while Soren dealt with Viren. At the wedding during Kazi's wedding vows, the sun got blocked, thus making her unable to continue.

Hours past, with Bait eating all of the food there during this. The amount of time it was taking lead to Janai and Amaya to decide to continue the wedding, and halfway through, they found out Karim, Janai's brother who wanted to take over the Janai's title as ruler of the Sunfire elves and rule a new empire for his people, had an army that was prepared to attack Janai's camp.

While Ezran tried to convince Karim to give up on his plan, this ended up failing, with Janai having to defeat her brother's army. After this, Ezran discovered that Katolis' castle had been destroyed by Sol Regem, leading to him breaking down crying over the loss of his home.

Personality

Bait is a very grumpy animal, as he acts annoyed to almost anything. Despite this, Bait truly cares for Ezran and helps him feel better no matter what. He was also shown to be selfess, as he protect Azymondias from Viren during the battle of the Storm Spire, despite him originaly being jealous over his relationship with Ezran.

Bait is based on the german word Beut, which means prey.
Bait's name was after a joke Harrow made, that Glow Toads were used as bait to capture fishes because they were delicious, something which Bait himself is unaware of.
