Alex Casey is the deuteragonist of the 2023 survival horror video game Alan Wake II.
He is a FBI agent and partner of Saga Anderson, who both came to Bright Falls to investigate murders that have occurred in the town. He is a interesting figure to Alan Wake, as his name and image mirrors to his famous fictional character novels.
He was voiced by the late James McCaffery, who also voiced Max Payne in the video games series of the same name, and modeled by Sam Lake, who also modeled Max Payne in the first game.
Biography
He is a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is colleagues with Saga Anderson. Casey’s existence has been a strange mystery, as a fictional character of the name appears in the action-thriller novel series by Alan Wake, who he takes a special interest from, as not only it mirrors his name, but is also similar to his own life and personality. And another interesting one is that a Finnish actor who goes by the name Sam Lake also has the same face as Casey.
Alan Wake
Alan Wake is known for writing the action-thriller Alex Casey books, which had been bestsellers ever since. However, Alan wrote his final Casey novel called, The Sudden Stop, which is about the death of Alex Casey himself, killing him off, which has received criticism. On The Harry Garrett Show, Alan appeared as a guest, alongside Sam Lake, in which Alan explains that he is moving on from Alex Casey and decides to focus on new things, in which he plans to write a book called Departure. The show ends off with Sam Lake doing the “iconic” face.
Control
While Casey does not appear in Control, he was mentioned where he is said to have taken an interest in Alan Wake’s case. His request for information prompted the Federal Bureau of Control to launch a probe into whether Casey is a real person or not, due to a coincidental name, that has caused the attention from the Bureau due to his name being similar to the Alan Wake’s thriller novels with the same name.
Alan Wake II
Casey is assigned to investigate murders in Bright Falls that had been committed, bringing along his partner Saga Anderson. After the attack of Robert Nightingale, who became a taken, Alan Wake was found at Cauldron lake, after mysteriously appearing next to Saga. Casey and Saga meet Alan, who was surprised by Casey who has the same name from his novels, in which Casey tells about. They then interrogate Alan about manuscripts found, believing he had written it and he claims about having escaped a alternative dimension called the Dark Place.
In the Dark Place, Alan encounters Casey several times, after a Finnish actor, appearing on the talk show In Between with Mr. Door, Sam Lake who is the second guest on the shoe portrays Casey in an upcoming film adaptation of his books. Lake who thanks Alan is a huge fan of his books, and when Mr. Door asks Alan about adaptions about how it takes different forms to his work, Lake understandably nods.
Lake who has the same face as Casey in which Alan finds uncanny. Exploring the Dark Place in New York, Alan encounters Casey, who is instead the manifestation of Alan’s novel series. A confused Alan asks him what’s going on, when Casey tells about a cult, called the Cult of Word is using the manuscripts and believes Alan wrote it. Moments later, Casey is killed by the Dark Presence, similarly to how he died in the books. Casey echoes during the investigations in the cults are later used as guides to traverse the Dark Place.
Trivia
- Alex Casey is a reference to Max Payne, from Remedy’s previous games. This was the only way for Remedy to reference Max Payne.
- Casey wears similar clothes to Max Payne, when he appears in the Dark Place, and since this was set in New York, it was obviously a reference to the first Max Payne game that was also set in New York.
