“ | Suffering for your gods is your only purpose. There's nothing for you after death, except death. | „ |
~ Rapu cruelly telling Gorr about his "responsibilities" as his worshipper, disillusioning him. |
Rapu is the overarching antagonist of Thor: Love and Thunder. He was the deity formerly worshipped by Gorr and his people and was indirectly responsible for Gorr's transformation into Gorr the God Butcher.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?
- He completely neglected his followers, leading to all of them dying except for Gorr.
- When Gorr found him, despite his initial happiness at meeting him, Rapu displays zero empathy for Gorr and his followers, one of them being Gorr's daughter, not caring about their deaths or suffering from lack of resources and starvation. To further rub salt in the wound, despite having an abundance of food with him, he callously threw fruit at Gorr.
- His response to Gorr's statement that he had no followers left was simply to find new ones, not caring that all his previous followers had died.
- He expects his followers to fully devote themselves to him and receive nothing in return.
- He even mocks Gorr's belief that they deserve some care by comparing him to a dog who wants a reward, indirectly suggesting how lowly he thinks of his followers.
- When Gorr renounces his faith to Rapu, he immediately attempts to murder Gorr, despite Rapu having done nothing to deserve Gorr's devotion.
- Plus him trying to kill Gorr for that makes him an hypocrite since he is indifferent towards his followers and lowly thinking of them.
- His attempt to murder Gorr lead to Gorr taking up the Necrosword and his path to villiany. Also, he was too stupid to not even stop the Necrosword and should not take a premature victory.
- Despite Gorr being the main antagonist of the film, Rapu's neglect and hostility led Gorr to becoming a very sympathetic villain, with Rapu receiving no sympathy himself.
- Even Rapu's death portrayed Gorr and not Rapu sympathetically. This death and Gorr's subsequent cursing by the Necrosword was done in an act of very justifiable self-defence that could have been averted had Rapu actually bothered to care for his followers or not be so vengeful against Gorr for denouncing him.
