Vision

Voldemort's false vision OOTPF

A vision was a magical visual impression that could be experienced by a Seer, an Animagus or a Legilimens.

Seers sometimes received visions of the future.[1][2][3] A seer's vision could be made visible to non-seers, including Muggles, through the use of magical objects such as a magical hookah or a crystal ball.[4]

Once their training was complete, an Animagus had a vision revealing their new animal form.[5]

A Legilimens also received visual impressions of their victim's memories.[6]

History

In his youth, Gellert Grindelwald, a Seer, one-time student of the prestigious Durmstrang Institute and eventual revolutionary, had a vision; seeing himself raise to dominance over the wizarding world.[7]

At some point after this, Grindelwald had another vision, in which an Obscurial killed the man he feared the most.[8]

In 1926, Gellert Grindelwald told Credence Barebone that he had a vision of himself, Credence, Mary Lou Barebone and a powerful Obscurial, though he did not recognise that Credence himself was the Obscurial.[9]

The following year, Grindelwald showed a vision of Credence Barebone to his followers in their safe house in Paris, and a horrifying vision of World War II to a large audience of wizards and witches in the Lestrange Mausoleum in Père Lachaise Cemetery.[4]

In the 1984–1985 school year, Jacob's sibling had visions of unknown origin showing Hogwarts covered in ice and an animated suit of armour.[10] In the following school year, when they tried to open a Cursed Vault on the fifth floor, Jacob's sibling experienced another vision of two unknown rooms and Lord Voldemort.[11] During the 1988–1989 school year, it was revealed that these visions were messages sent to them by their older brother Jacob, as both of them were natural Legilimens, and he had sought to warn them of dangers ahead.[12]

At the start of the 1989–1990 school year, Professor Trelawney told Jacob's sibling a vision of murky water, changes swirling around them, endings and a final price to made, while reading their tea leaves in Divination. She did not know exactly what it meant but she warned them to be careful.[13]

Later in the school year, Trelawney interrupted one of her sixth-year Divination lessons to tell them her Inner Eye had showed her a vision of a Dark wizard having escaped from Auror custody having been spotted nearby. However, Ismelda Murk pointed out that that was the Daily Prophet's headline, but Trelawney replied that she had forseen the headline.[14]

In August 1994, Harry Potter experienced a vision of Lord Voldemort, Peter Pettigrew and Frank Bryce in the Riddle House in Little Hangleton, whilst in his bedroom at 4 Privet Drive.[15]

In December 1995, Harry Potter received a frightening vision in bed at Hogwarts, in which he witnessed the attack on Arthur Weasley in the Department of Mysteries from the perspective of Nagini the snake, the perpetrator.[16]

Once he had realised their Horcrux connection, Voldemort was able to send Harry Potter a false vision of his godfather Sirius Black being tortured in the Department of Mysteries.[17][18]
