—Isan Ryer to Shiro Amada |
Isan Ryer (イーサン・ライヤー Īsan Raiyā?)[1] is a character introduced in the anime OVA Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team.
Personality & Character
On the surface, Ryer appears to be a mild yet firm leader, being the only presiding member at Shiro Amada's court martial not to laugh at his idealistic speech. However, this was soon revealed to be a facade. In reality, he was extremely ruthless, willing to stop at nothing in order to achieve victory and secure his own reputation, including sacrificing the lives of his soldiers and giving the order to fire on a hospital ship. Ryer is also very level-headed, remaining calm and collected even when faced with imminent death. His eyes always seemed to be shut, only opening when he is enraged or serious.
History
During the One Year War, Ryer was the regimental commander of the Earth Federation Forces Far Eastern Front Independent Mechanized Regiment.[2] He was a member of the inquiry for Shiro Amada, the leader of the 08th MS Team, who was accused of being a spy for assisting Zeon pilot Aina Sahalin when the two were stranded in a snowy mountain. After Shiro made an idealistic speech about how people should be able to understand one another whether they are friend or foe, Ryer simply asked him whether or not he would still be able to fire on the enemy, to which Shiro had no answer.[3]
Ultimately, Ryer reinstated Shiro, believing that him knowing Aina could be an opportunity.[4] As "insurance policy", he ordered Shiro's teammates Karen Joshua and Terry Sanders Jr. to shoot him should he ever desert, threatening to have the entire team executed by firing squad if they do not comply.[4][5]
In December, U.C. 0079, after learning that the Apsaras II was created to destroy Jaburo, Ryer ordered an operation to find and destroy its development base, leading the operation from a Big Tray-class land battleship.[4] After discovering Ginias Sahalin's mountain base, he sent numerous mobile suit teams, including the 07th MS Team, on suicide missions to break through the base's defenses, hoping that one of the mobile suits' reactor would reach critical and destroy the entire mountain base. When Kojima questioned this, he told him that with Operation Star One near, he doesn't want Revil laughing at him for allowing the Apsaras to get into space.[5]
When the Apsaras III, piloted by Ginias and Aina, deployed from the base and burned a line on the ground using its mega beam cannon, Ryer was about to give the order to attack. However, Aina revealed that the beam was only a warning shot and asked for a temporary truce to allow the hospital ship Kerguelen to depart. Ryer refused the request, saying that a truce at gunpoint was unacceptable. In response, Aina stepped out of the cockpit as a sign of good faith, causing Ryer to accept the truth. However, he still secretly asked his RGM-79[G] GM Sniper to stand by, saying that he made no promises.[6]
As the Kerguelen was taking off, Ginias fired the mega particle cannon, destroying numerous Federation mobile suits and almost sending Aina flying off the Apsaras. In response, Ryer ordered a GM Sniper to fire on the Kerguelen, destroying the ship. When a MS-07H-8 Gouf Flight Type fell out of the wreckage relatively intact, Ryer ordered the GM Sniper to fire on it as well.[6]
Enraged and egged on by Ginias, Aina was about to give into her hatred and fire at the Big Tray, but changed her mind at the last second due to the appearance of Shiro in the RX-79[G]Ez-8 Gundam Ez8, shifting her aim to hit the mountain behind it instead. When she was rescued by Shiro after Ginias shot her out of the cockpit, Ryer ordered Karen to execute Shiro for desertion as they discussed, much to the shock of Kojima, who was unaware of the execution order. At this point, Kojima finally had enough and left the ship to join the rest of the 08th MS Team. Ryer tempted him to stay by saying that the air conditioning at Jaburo was quite comfortable, to which he replied that he could never stand air conditioning.[6]
As Shiro and Aina prepared to take down the Apsaras III and stop Ginias in the Ez8, Ryer ordered one of the GM Snipers to fire at the Gundam. The GM Sniper vaporized its left arm and part of its torso using its beam sniper rifle, but failed to hit the cockpit. As Ginias prepared to fire the beam cannon at full power and destroy both the Federation Forces and the Ez8, Ryer ordered the Big Tray to fire at it, realizing that he had to stop it from firing. However, the Apsaras continued rising, evading all of the Big Tray's cannon fire.[6]
The beam landed close to the Big Tray. As the bridge crew called for a full evacuation, Ryer simply stood still and coldly remarked that it was far too late. The shockwave from the blast then crushed the entire bridge, killing him.[6]
