The Gungnir (グングニール) is a technology introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Technical Information

A special weapon that destroys electronic equipment by generating a powerful ElectroMagnetic Pulse (EMP). A special piezoelectric element, which can only be manufactured in space, can be rapidly blown up by the igniter installed around it to emit a powerful EMP. Because it requires the assembly and installation of an ignition system and the entry of a password from the outside, it is assumed to be operated with MS.

History

First Alliance-PLANT War

The Gungnir was used by ZAFT to compensate for the lack of troops during the Battle of Porta Panama on May 25, C.E. 71. While ZAFT's weapons were unaffected due to EMP countermeasures, the Earth Alliance forces' weapons and facilities were immediately rendered unusable, making the Gungnir the biggest factor in the fall of the Panama Base. The Alliance's facilities were equipped with EMP shieldings, but the Gungnir's electromagnetic shockwave was too powerful to counteract. The mass driver at the base was also destroyed by Gungnir, as its superconducting rails was unprotected against EMP.^[1] Originally, the mass driver was a valuable facility for ZAFT, but after their heavy defeat in Alaska, they didn't have the forces required to occupy it.
