Coaly and his mother Persia were residents of Side 7 who, following the Zeon attack, evacuated the colony aboard the White Base. The White Base subsequently landed on Earth and began a long trek across the North American continent while pursued by Zeon forces. When several of the evacuees asked to leave the White Base after they passed the Grand Canyon, he and his mother chose to leave as well. But Persia and Coaly decided not to travel with the rest of the evacuees, since her hometown was not far from their current location. Persia would later discover from Zeon soldiers that St. Anges had been destroyed during the war, but due to Coaly's youth he is unable to truly fathom his mother's emotional distress upon hearing the news.
