Fromis_9 (Hangul: 프로미스나인 or 프로미스 9; initialism for From Idol School; stylized as fromis_9) is a South Korean girl group formed through the survival show Idol School by Mnet and Stone Music Entertainment. It consists of eight members; Hayoung, Seoyeon, Saerom, Chaeyoung, Jisun, Jiwon, Jiheon and Nagyung. Originally a nine member group, Gyuri left the group and their agency on July 31, 2022.[1] On November 29, 2024, Pledis Entertainment announced that after extensive discussions, the group decided not to renew their exclusive contract and would be parting ways with the company following the expiration of this one on Decemter 31, 2024. History
2017: Pre-Debut & Idol School
romis_9 was originally a group of 41 girls, who competed on the survival show Idol School. After the eleven-episode series ended and the nine members were announced as fromis_, and a reality show was started titled Fromis' room, that documented the girls lives up until their pre-debut single was released titled "Glass Shoes". During this time it was decided to add the 9 to the name, creating fromis_9
2018: Debut, To. Heart, To. Day, and LOVE BOMB
On January 24th of 2018, fromis_9 debuted with their first mini called To. Heart. They received massive praise from their first debut, with the lead single from To. Heart being number 4 on the Gaon Album Chart. Four months later Gyuri took part in Produce 48, another survival show similar to Idol School. Fromis_9 continued as an eight-member group and released their second mini, titled To. Day. Gyuri was later eliminated from Produce 48 after the third round, in 25th place. She joined fromis_9 once more making the group complete for their special single album From.9, which released on October 10th with its title track LOVE BOMB, which quickly became their most popular song to-date.
2019: FUN FACTORY, FUN!, and LOVE RUMPUMPUM
After a eight-month long hiatus, fromis_9 announced a comeback with the group's first single album, FUN FACTORY. The album was released on June 4, 2019 along with the title track FUN!. After promotions for the album ended the group announced they would be promoting with the b-side Love RumPumPum as a gift for fans, as well as attending Kcon New York and LA that summer.
2020: Japanese Predebut Plans, My Little Society
In February of 2020 the group announced their Japanese predebut digital single LOVE BOMB (Japanese Ver.) (Single), which would include both Japanese versions of LOVE BOMB and FUN!, to be released on March 13, 2020. But it's delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic.
On August 24, it was confirmed that Fromis 9 were preparing to make their first comeback in over a year. The group's third mini album My Little Society, along with its title track Feel Good (Secret Code) was released on September 16, 2020.
2021: 9 Way Ticket, Change in Management
On May 3, 2021, an official photo teaser posted to the group's various social media accounts announced that their second single album 9 Way Ticket would be released on May 17, 2021.
On August 16, 2021, Pledis Entertainment announced that fromis_9 would be leaving Off The Record and would be managed by Pledis from then on.[3]
2022: Midnight Guest, Jiheon's hiatus, from our Memento Box, Gyuri's departure
On December 15, 2021, fromis_9 confirmed they would be making a comeback with a new mini album in mid-January. On December 30, teasers revealed that the group would be releasing their fourth mini album Midnight Guest on January 17, 2022.
On February 24, it was reported that Jiheon went to the hospital due to feeling unwell and was told by doctors that she was experiencing an anxiety disorder. They recommended she take a period of rest and recuperation. The company agreed and she will be taking a break from group activities to focus on her health.[4]
On April 18, Pledis Entertainment announced that Jiheon will resume her activities, starting with the group's 1st fan meeting, scheduled on April 22.[5]
On May 23, it was announced that fromis_9 would be making a comeback with the release of their upcoming fifth mini album before the end of June. In addition, it would also be a full-group comeback with all 9 members following Jiheon's return from her hiatus.
On June 6, it was announced through the group's social media accounts that they will be releasing their fifth mini album, from our Memento Box, on June 27.[6] The comeback showcase was canceled because Hayoung, Jiwon, Jiheon, Seoyeon and Chaeyoung suffered injuries from a minor car accident, which delayed their return until June 30. Since July 12, the song has won 6 wins as of July 9, 2022, including the group's first win on public free-to-air TV, 1627 days after debut. (Music Bank, KBS2, July 8, 2022).
On July 28, Pledis Entertainment announced that Gyuri would be concluding her activites as a member of fromis_9 as of July 31, and the group would continue to promote as an eight-member group following her departure.[7]
On November 10, 2022, during the 2022 HYBE Briefing With the Community, CEO Park Ji Won announced that fromis_9 will be coming back in the first half of 2023.[8]
2023: Official light stick, Unlock My World
On January 13, fromis_9 revealed the design of their official light stick four years after their debut.[9]
On February 14, it was reported that the group is preparing for a comeback with their first full-length album in mid-March, but the release was postponed.[10] Three months later, on May 15, a teaser photo posted revealed the group's first full-length album, titled Unlock My World, would be released on June 5.[11]
2024: "Supersonic" & Departure from Pledis
On May 31, it was announced that the group will make a comeback in August.[12] On July 18, fromis_9 announced that they will be releasing their third single album "Supersonic" on August 12.[13]
On November 29, 2024, Pledis Entertainment announced that the group's exclusive contracts are would be expiring soon. They are set to leave the agency on December 31 after the members decided not to renew their contracts. They would release one final song under Pledis, titled From, on December 23, 2024.
On December 17, fromis_9 has been revealed to be a part of the 2024 MBC Gayo Daejejeon line up on December 31, the last day of their contract with Pledis Entertainment.
2025: Transfer to ASND Label
On January 26, 2025, ASND Label reported that five fromis_9 members, namely, Hayoung, Jiwon, Chaeyoung, Nagyung, and Jiheon had signed on with them following their departures from Pledis Entertainment. Moreover, the agency stated that they are currently negotiating the fromis_9 trademark with Pledis.
