The Stille 「シュティレ Shutire?」, also referred to as the Meteoric Iron Bird 「隕鉄鳥?」, are a species of small birds made of meteoric iron.[1] They are used as a capture target for the first stage of the First-Class Mage Exam.
Appearance
The Stille are small birds with warm, sandy-orange colored feathers. The head features a small crest of feathers at the top, a small, concal pointed beak, and beady, black eyes with a prominent yellow ring around them. The appearance of the Stille do not appear to differ between different birds.
Behavior
The only known habitat of the Stille is the Grobe Basin in the Northern Lands, where they primarily reside in trees and are seen wading in bodies of water. Due to their hypersensitivity to mana, they avoid areas or entities that emit mana. However, the Stille barely emit any mana themselves, making them difficult to detect.
Abilities
- Supersonic speed: The Stille can fly faster than the speed of sound, making it impossible for mages to keep up with them in the air.[2]
- Toughness: The Stille have a toughness comparable to dragons and can resist offensive spells. Additionally, they are capable of utilizing their toughness to break out of physical restraints.[2] When combined with the Stille's speed, this robustness can result in a Stille ravaging the area around it when escaping.[3]
- Mana hypersensitivity: The Stille possess extreme sensitivity to mana.[2] Thus, they avoid areas where mana is present and can sense mages even when their mana is suppressed, such as Frieren, Kanne, and Lawine, whom they detected from twenty meters away.[4] However, the Stille's reliance on mana detection means that a mage capable of completely suppressing their mana is able to get close to one.[5]
- Low mana presence: The Stille barely emit mana, which makes them difficult to detect.[2]

Trivia
- According to hohobun, the director and animator of the ending theme for the first cour of Season 1, the Stille asset used in the theme is based on the Stille in Chapter 38 and the European robin.[6] However, hohobun clarifies that the latter is not officially the inspiration behind the design of the original Stille in the manga.[7]
