Tahliah Debrett Barnett (born 16 January 1988), known professionally as FKA Twigs (stylized as FKA twigs), is an English singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, businesswoman, model, and actress. She was born and raised in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and became a backup dancer after moving to London when she was 17 years old. Twigs[a] first entered the music industry with the release of her extended plays EP1 and EP2 in 2012 and 2013 respectively, both of which received highly positive reviews from music critics.

Following the release of her debut studio album LP1 in August of 2014, Twigs gained further recognition after it peaked at number 16 on the UK Albums Chart as well as at number 30 on the US Billboard 200 and was nominated for that year's Mercury Prize. The album yielded the singles "Two Weeks", "Pendulum", and "Video Girl". Twigs released her third extended play M3LL155X the following year in August of 2015. A short film was released concurrently with the extended play featuring four songs from the extended play. In 2016, Twigs debuted one standalone single, "Good to Love", and embarked on a three year hiatus from releasing music.

Twigs returned to music with her second studio album MAGDALENE released in November of 2019. The album received widespread universal acclaim upon its release and was featured on numerous year-end lists in 2019. That same year, Twigs ventured into acting and starred in the film Honey Boy. After signing with Atlantic Records, Twigs released her debut mixtape CAPRISONGS in January of 2022. She continued to venture into acting with The Crow in 2024 and released her third studio album EUSEXUA in January of 2025.

Twigs' work has garnered tremendous acclaim, and it has been described as "genre-bending",[3] drawing on various genres including electronic music, trip hop, electronica, indietronica, techno, art pop, trance, hyperpop, and avant-garde.

Early life

Young twigs with her mother

Tahliah Debrett Barnett was born and raised in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Her mother is an English woman of Spanish descent who was a former salsa dancer & teacher, and a clothing designer & seamstress, while her father, a musician, is a jazz dancer of Jamaican descent.[4] She was raised by her mother and her stepfather, whom she described as a "jazz fanatic of English, Spanish, Jamaican, and Egyptian descent whose musical collection is incredible".[5][6] She did not meet her biological father until she was 18 years old.[5]

Twigs grew up in Cheltenham, Glouchestershire surrounded by farmland and described the county as "a very green place" and "kind of in the middle of nowhere".[7][8] She attended St. Edwards School in Cheltenham, where her teachers hailed her as "an exceptional talent".[9] She attended the school from the age of 11 to 18 with her education having been funded by an academic scholarship.[10] From a young age, she undertook opera and ballet lessons and took part in several St Edward's School productions.[11]

At age 16, Twigs started making music in youth clubs and she moved to South London to pursue a career as a dancer when she was 17.[7][12] She enrolled at the BRIT School[13] and after changing her focus from dance to music, she transferred to Croydon College to pursue an education in fine arts.[5]

Twigs first worked as a backup dancer and appeared in numerous music videos for artists such as Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran, Plan B, and Dionne Bromfield among others.[14] She most notably was a backup dancer for Jessie J in her 2010 music video for "Do It Like a Dude" and she appeared again in her 2011 music video for "Price Tag".[15] Twigs also made an appearance in Dionne Bromfield's music video for her 2011 song "Yeah Right". In 2011, she appeared in a two-minute BBC comedy sketch titled Beyoncé Wants Groceries, as a backup dancer.[15] When Twigs was 18 years old, she began working with local record producers to try to find her own musical sound. Around this time, she wrote the song "I'm Your Doll" and ended up producing a lot of what she considers to be "really bad demos".[6] For a time, she worked as a hostess in a strip club and sang periodically at The Box Soho in Soho.[16]

In 2012, Twigs was photographed for and featured on the pre-fall cover of i-D Magazine. She became known simply as Twigs for the way that her joints crack.[8] She added the initialism FKA to her name when another act called the Twigs – twin sisters active and recording since 1994 – asked her to change her stage name.[8] It was believed or assumed that the "FKA" stood for the business abbreviation "formerly known as", but Twigs has said in multiple interviews that the letters do not stand for anything in particular.[17][18] Twigs released a music video for the song "Hide" on 10 July 2012. The song serves as the first song officially released as a music video from Twigs' debut extended play EP1,[citation needed] which was independently released by Twigs on 4 December 2012 through Bandcamp and through vinyl. A music video for each song was uploaded to Twigs' YouTube channel, with all them having surpassed one million views individually.

Water me

In May of 2013, Twigs uploaded a music video for the song "How's That", taken from her second extended play EP2. Two months later in August, she uploaded a music video for the extended play's first promotional single "Water Me". Both videos were directed by Japanese-English artist, animator, and musician Jesse Kanda, with the video for "Water Me" going viral and reaching over sixteen million views. That same month, The Guardian profiled Twigs for their "New Band of the Day" feature, describing her as "the UK's best example to date of ethereal, twisted R&B."[19] EP2 was released in September of that year through Young (formerly known as Young Turks) and was produced solely by Twigs and Venezuelan musician and record producer Arca. In December, she was nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2014 prize, and was chosen by Spotify for their Spotlight on 2014 list.[20][21] Twigs was then featured on Billboard's 14 Artists to Watch in 2014.

Twigs for v magazine

In April of 2014, Twigs appeared on the cover of The Fader Magazine for its 91st issue. She began writing for her then-unnamed debut studio album during a period of "self-hatred", which she considers "quite normal" for a young person.[6] Two months later on 9 June through social media, Twigs officially announced her debut studio album LP1, which was set for release on 11 August in the UK and 12 August in the US. On 24 June, Twigs released the song "Two Weeks", which served as the lead single to LP1 alongside its music video. It has since become her most popular and successful song to date. Twigs directed and guest-starred in the music video for "Ouch Ouch" by rapper LUCKI (then known as Lucki Eck$) having produced the song.[22] Twigs released the song "Pendulum" on 12-inch vinyl as the second single from LP1 on 29 July, serving as a B-side to "Two Weeks". The song premiered on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show the same day.[23] "Pendulum" was digitally released as the album's second single the next day, with the music video for the song being released on 14 January 2015.[24]

LP1 was officially released on 6 August 2014 through Young (formerly Young Turks) and received widespread critical acclaim.[25] LP1 debuted at number 16 on the UK Albums Chart, selling 4,051 copies in its first week and in the United States, the album peaked at number 30 on the Billboard 200 chart with first-week sales of 10,370 copies. The album placed very high on numerous year-end critics' lists. Time gave a positive review, saying that Twigs has "made that transition to one of the most compelling and complex acts in R&B", and later ranked it, as did Clash, #1 album of the year.[26] She then announced a world tour in support of LP1 starting on 2 October at The Dome in Brighton, East Sussex and ending on 3 December in Orlando, Florida at The Social.[27] That same August, Barnett was signed to London-based production company Academy Films. On 20 August, she uploaded three videos to her YouTube channel which she directed: a video titled "Wet Wipez", starring the London dance crew of the same name; a video titled "tw-ache", which is a remix of "Ache"; and a video for "Ouch Ouch", which she produced. In September, LP1 was revealed as one of the nominees for the 2014 Mercury Prize award.[28] The same month, Twigs performed "Two Weeks" on BBC's Later... with Jools Holland.[29][30] In October, "Video Girl", the third and final single from LP1, was released alongside a music video a few days later, as well as an advert for Google Glass which Twigs directed.[31] She made her US television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on 4 November and performed "Two Weeks" on the show.[32][33]

In February, she performed Congregata, a theatrical "coming together" and choreographed performance that visualised "the story of my life while making this album" at the Roundhouse in Camden, London.[37] On 15 May on her Instagram account, she posted a picture of men posing with jackets on that had an image of Twigs' face from the "Papi Pacify" music video with Twigs captioning the pic "coming soon... <3", hinting at either merchandise or the extended play's alleged release in the summer. During an interview with Complex, released in June, Twigs stated that she had changed the title of the extended play to Melissa and that it would be released within two months. She confirmed it would include the songs "Glass & Patron", "Mothercreep", "I'm Your Doll", "Figure 8", and "In Time".[6] The extended play, stylized as M3LL155X, was released on 13 August 2015 containing all five previously announced tracks and was accompanied by a short film directed by Twigs. The film features pregnancy, sex dolls, vogueing, and a cameo from French fashion designer Michèle Lamy. The title of the extended play reads as "Melissa" and is named after Twigs' "personal female energy". The extended play received critical acclaim from music critics and the film was acclaimed by American singer-songwriter Katy Perry.[38] Twigs performed "Figure 8" and "In Time" at the 20th MOBO Awards in November 2015 and was nominated for three MOBO Awards, one for Best Female Act and two for Best Video–Twigs won the latter award for the "Pendulum" music video.[39][40]

Twigs avantgarden 2017

In 2017, Twigs starred in and narrated a television ad campaign for Nike titled "Do you believe in more?", and later that year in October, she launched the first issue of her Instagram magazine AVANTgarden.[52][53][54] In relation to why she started the digital magazine, Twigs said: "I’ve struggled to feel comfortable on social media as I’m a very private person and I find it hard to share the things I’m doing on an everyday level. It feels so intrusive and weird to me. But, if it’s something I can put creativity into and I can have certain amount of imagination and control around it, it makes me feel much more comfortable. I thought it would be much more impactful to create something like this, rather than to put out a picture with some words underneath it, or retweet something. I thought it would spark a conversation. I think for me it’s my way of interacting with people that follow me in an honest way without me cringing at myself. Because it is cringe sometimes. Why not create something that can bring an artistic community together?"[55] Twigs published the second issue of AVANTgarden on social media on 28 November 2017[56] and attended the British Fashion Awards for a second time in December wearing Versace.[57]

She declared there would be "no new music for a while", seemingly postponing the album.[153] In December, Twigs attended the British Fashion Awards for the fourth time wearing a halter neck chainmail dress from Valentino.[154] and teased EUSEXUA in an Instagram post captioning: "this year i have been making my album in cabs in berlin, huts in big sur, caves in ibiza, roads in hackney, i have written lyrics by lakes in prague and in the toilets of raves with a biro on the back of my hand". In January 2024, the UK Advertising Standards Authority banned a Calvin Klein advertisement that featured Twigs posing semi-nude, on the grounds that it framed her as a "stereotypical sexual object". Twigs defended the ad, saying that she is "proud of [her] physicality".[155] Twigs also revealed on the Twigscord that the album would be released later in the year, noting that it is "deep but not sad".[156] In March 2024, the ASA revoked their ban, referencing the views of Twigs and the public, and "concern that our rationale for banning the ad was substantially flawed".[157] That same month, Twigs was featured on the cover of the April issue of British Vogue magazine and was interviewed by Chioma Nnadi.[158][159] She also collaborated with English dance duo Two Shell and released the song "Talk to Me".[160] Twigs attended the 2024 Met Gala, marking her fourth appearance at the Gala following last year.[161] She headlined the Met Gala afterparty and performed tracks from EUSEXUA. Artistry

Musical style

Possessing a soprano vocal range,[163][164] Twigs' music has been described as "genre-bending",[3] drawing on a variety of styles, including electronic music, trip hop, choral music, industrial, and avant-garde.[165][166] In her songs and music videos she incorporates elements of afrofuturism.[167] Karen Vintges of the University of Amsterdam described Twigs' performance style as "porno-chic", and said it "refuses to conform to standard norms of heterosexual beauty".[168] In "Sum Bout U", her collaboration with 645AR, she explored the artistic value of sex work.[169] Regarding her musical style, Twigs said:

❝ I am not restricted by any musical genre. I like to experiment with sounds, generating emotions while putting my voice on certain atmospheres ... I found my own way of playing punk. I like industrial sounds and incorporating everyday life's sounds like a car alarm. ❞
– Twigs via Le Monde.[170]

She has been associated with the alternative R&B tag, though she herself has rejected the R&B label as related to her race:

❝ It's just because I'm mixed race. When I first released music and no one knew what I looked like, I would read comments like: 'I've never heard anything like this before, it's not in a genre.' And then my picture came out six months later, now she's an R&B singer. I share certain sonic threads with classical music; my song 'Preface' is like a hymn. So let's talk about that. If I was white and blonde and said I went to church all the time, you'd be talking about the 'choral aspect'. But you're not talking about that because I'm a mixed-race girl from south London. ❞
– Twigs via The Fader.[171]

Influences

Siouxsie and the banshees in 79

The first singers who influenced Twigs were Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Marvin Gaye. When she started composing songs, she wanted to reproduce music she liked:

❝ Every bit of music that I made sounded like a pastiche of Siouxsie and the Banshees or Adam Ant. But through that I discovered myself. ❞
– Twigs via Red Bull Music Academy.[172]

Comparisons

Her work has been compared to that of Tricky[173] as well as Kate Bush, Janet Jackson, The xx, and Massive Attack. Pitchfork writer Philip Sherburne compared her breathy vocals and the electronic production style of LP1 to Ciara, the Weeknd and Beyoncé.[174] The Wall Street Journal described her as "an heir to futuristic R&B muses like Aaliyah, Missy Elliott and others under the progressive sway of producer Timbaland."[175] Variety wrote that her music was "darkly avant-garde, aggressive and atmospheric", adding that her "scorched earth-soul of 2014's LP1 and 2019's MAGDALENE positioned her as a cross between Billie Holiday and Siouxsie and the Banshees", with a production style like Lee Scratch Perry's.[176]

According to Slate, "her sound is uniquely her own – melismatic falsetto over beats that are equal parts spooky and soothing". In 2020, The New York Times noted: "in recent years, Twigs, now 35, has begun to harness her pursuit of avant-garde innovation and technical virtuosity toward a deeper exploration of pain and insecurity", making wider comparisons to Janelle Monáe, Fiona Apple, Solange, and Lana Del Rey. In terms of her relationship to fame and adoption of different personae on the stage and in her music, Simon Critchley aligned her alongside David Bowie.[177]

Twigs had surgery to remove fibroid tumours from her uterus in December 2017. She described her experience as "living with a fruit bowl of pain every day" and saluted the bravery of other women living with the condition.[178] In 2020, she went vegan after discovering that a diet including animal products was exacerbating the symptoms from her tumours.[179]

Relationships

Twigs began dating English actor Robert Pattinson in September of 2014, and they became engaged before ending their engagement and relationship in mid-2017. As a result of their relationship, she received racist and sexist online abuse.[180][181] She would later use her relationship with Pattinson as the subject of the song "cellophane" in early 2019.

Twigs met American actor Shia LaBeouf on the set of the film Honey Boy, and they dated from mid-2018 to mid-2019.[182] She filed a lawsuit against him at Los Angeles Superior Court in December of 2020, accusing him of sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress during their relationship.[183][184] In his response, LaBeouf stated he had been "abusive" to himself and those around him "for years" and that he was "ashamed" and "sorry to those [he] hurt".[185] He later denied all allegations made by Twigs.[186] Alma Har'el, the director of Honey Boy, came out in support of Twigs, saying in a statement that she has a "deep respect for FKA twigs’ courage and resilience," and that reading what Twigs had endured left her "heartbroken and I stand with her in solidarity. I’m sending my love to her...all victims of domestic violence, and everyone who is trying to stop cycles of abuse."[187] The lawsuit is set to proceed to trial in October of 2024.[188]

From 2020 to 2022, Twigs was in a relationship with English musician Matty Healy of the band The 1975.[189][190] She provided the background vocals for the 1975 song "If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)",[191] and their relationship inspired Healy to write the song "I'm in Love with You".[192]

As of March 2023, Twigs is in a relationship with English director and photographer Jordan Hemingway.[193]

Activism

In 2022, Twigs signed the Musicians For Palestine pledge, refusing to perform in Israel following the 2021 Israel–Palestine crisis.[194] Twigs made an appearance as a special guest at Sudanese-Canadian singer-songwriter and poet Mustafa's Artists for Aid Benefit Concert for Gaza and Sudan at London in July of 2024.[195][196] She closed the show by performing a rendition of "cellophane".[197]

Twigs promoted a campaign by Sistah Space encouraging people to lobby their local MP to support Valerie’s Law, which would introduce mandatory training for the police and other agencies when dealing with domestic abuse against black women and girls.[198]

In April of 2024, Twigs testified before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property calling for regulations on deepfakes and artificial intelligence.[199][200]
