Fort is the third level in Far Cry. This mission served as the game's demo.

Overview

After leaving the carrier on an inflatable boat, Jack arrives at the Cabatu island. He is tasked with disabling the communication system operating in the area in order to divert their attention so that he can escape and focus on rescuing Valerie. His target is the satellite dish situated in an old World War II Japanese fort on top of a mountain visible from the very start of the level.

On his way, Jack overhears mercenaries speculating that he is not working alone and that there is an all-out invasion from the outside incoming.

To get to the fort, the player has first to land his boat in one of the three possible locations. The longest beach to the south is the most heavily guarded and features two idle patrol boats. Another, smaller beach lies further to the southeast and is protected by four mercenaries. If engaged, two of them will enter a buggy and drive off into the jungle. If the player chooses another way and the soldiers guarding the stairway to the fort are engaged, their commander will call in reinforcements (the buggy with two mercs) coming from the former route. The mountain can also be approached from a cove located to the southwest, which is patrolled by one boat. Whichever route is chosen, they all lead through the jungle to stairs going upwards. As the player proceeds upstairs, the path starts to diverge in two directions. One leads into a bunker, while the other leads straight to the fort

When Jack approaches the communications center, Doyle informs him that the door is locked electronically. Doyle attempts to bypass the security system to unlock the door remotely. In the meantime, Jack is forced to withstand the onslaught of mortar shells fired from a boat and the gunfire of helicopters aggravated by the landing of troops.

Once Doyle manages to unlock the door, Jack enters the building. In one of the rooms, he catches a mercenary commander watching Dr. Krieger displayed on a screen. Jack listens to Krieger speaking, out of context, about his "test subjects demonstrating superhuman qualities". Finally, Jack places a pack of explosives on the gas generator which powers the comm center and then runs through a tunnel towards the exit. The level ends with a cutscene showing the satellite dish explode and collapse.

  • Krieger's message seen in the Communications Center might be foreshadowing Krieger's mutation near the end of the game.
  • The level appears as a video on game's main menu.
  • This level contains an Easter Egg featuring a pig, two pigs or mercenaries driving a buggy.[1][2][3]
  • In Beta version, Jack was actually captured by the Mercenaries in the first mission. The Fort level was the second mission.
  • In the map editor, there is a model of Jack at the end of the communications center tunnel, this indicates that there is an extended cutscene of Jack running away from the explosion.
  • In Beta version, Jack arms the bomb for 15 minutes, but it sets for 15 seconds instead.
  • In an older version, the wrecked Akagi carrier was the start of the mission.
