McCredie

I've been here since the first push into Vegas. Back in the day, this camp was the hotspot for conflicts with the Legion, raider tribes, you name it.

Sergeant McCredie is the non-commissioned officer responsible for Army troops stationed at Camp Golf in 2281. He can be found at the command center in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background

McCredie is a career soldier, who joined the NCR Army at 16.[1] After reaching the rank of sergeant, he refused promotion repeatedly, in order to stay in the field, rather than behind a desk.[2] He is also a veteran of the Mojave Campaign, present in the region ever since the NCR first entered in back in 2274. It once being the front line against the Legion and the various raider tribes.[3]

By 2281, he has been stationed at Camp Golf for some time, drilling troops to keep discipline up and combat readiness high.[4] One of the teams that he is in charge of are so terrible that they have become infamous, earning the nickname the "Misfits." These soldiers are so incompetent, disrespectful and lazy that they have completely bottomed out in their army careers. McCredie has become greatly frustrated after so many failed attempts at getting them to straighten up, that he has lost hope in their redemption. Despite this, he refuses to give up on them, and set on whipping them in to shape if it kills him, or them.[5][6] Should the Courier offer to help he will gladly allow them, hoping that they will listen to someone that they don't see as an authority figure.[7] The results of this will vary depending on whether they are properly taught,[8] convinced to cooperate with each other,[9] completely fabricate their paperwork[10] or get them addicted to Psycho.[11]

  1. The Courier: "How do you like serving in the Army?"
McCredie: "Man, it's my life. I joined up when I was 16 - I don't know how to do anything else."
    The Courier: "That's some dedication."
McCredie: "Thanks. I only wish some of the soldiers under my command would share some of it."
    (McCredie's dialogue)
  2. The Courier: "How do you like serving in the Army?"
McCredie: "Man, it's my life. I joined up when I was 16 - I don't know how to do anything else."
The Courier: "You joined at 16 and you're still a sergeant?"
McCredie: "Yeah, well... I didn't want to get promoted out of the field. I didn't join up to drive a desk."
    (McCredie's dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "How'd you end up at Camp Golf?"
McCredie: "I've been here since the first push into Vegas. Back in the day, this camp was the hotspot for conflicts with the Legion, raider tribes, you name it. These days, I spend most of my time trying to beat a little discipline into the soldiers under my command. They've gotten soft with no action."
The Courier: "Funny, I thought this was where they sent washouts and losers."
McCredie: "Yeah, well, somebody has to wrangle those washouts and losers. Somebody's got to turn them into a real fighting force."
    (McCredie's dialogue)
  4. The Courier: "So what do you do now that the fighting's died down?"
McCredie: "Mostly drill the troops, try to keep the discipline up and combat readiness high. It's not the easiest job in the world - soldiers without a mission get bored very easily. Still, with the Legion just across the river, we have to be ready."
    (McCredie's dialogue)
  5. The Courier: "Sounds like you're a little disappointed in your troops."
McCredie: "Disappointed? We call 'em the Misfits for a reason. They're undisciplined, lazy, and they have absolutely no espirit de corps. The squad leader's got some promise, kid named Mags, but as for the rest... I don't see much hope. I'm going to make them shape up if it kills me, though. Or them, for that matter."

McCredie: "Yeah, well, somebody has to wrangle those washouts and losers. Somebody's got to turn them into a real fighting force."
    (McCredie's dialogue)
  7. The Courier: "Maybe I can help you whip them into shape."
McCredie: "You're welcome to try - hell, maybe they'll listen to somebody they don't see as an authority figure."
    (McCredie's dialogue)
  8. McCredie: "I gotta admit, I'm impressed. The Misfits are drilling better than I ever expected."
(McCredie's dialogue) Note: This greeting is spoken should the player choose the option to actually teach them combat during the quest Flags of Our Foul-Ups.
  9. McCredie: "Well, their test scores are only marginally improved, but I'm hearing good things about the Misfits' teamwork."
(McCredie's dialogue) Note: This greeting is spoken should the player choose the cooperation option during the quest Flags of Our Foul-Ups.
  10. McCredie: "Seems the Misfits scored pretty well on their readiness evaluations. That strikes me as... suspicious."
(McCredie's dialogue) Note: This greeting is spoken should the player choose the fraud option during the quest Flags of Our Foul-Ups.
  11. McCredie: "I'm not sure what's going on with the Misfits - their accuracy is in the toilet, but they're spoiling for a fight like I ain't never seen."
(McCredie's dialogue) Note: This greeting is spoken should the player choose the drug addiction option during the quest Flags of Our Foul-Ups.
