John Bear is an arena fighter in the Pitt in 2277 alongside his brother Grudd Bear.
Background
During the Scourge, his other brother Greg was taken in by the Brotherhood. However, he and Grudd were left behind due to being "too wild and mean." They were then taken in by Ishmael Ashur for his raider army, and in his words, they became two of his "finest soldiers."[1] By 2277, the Bear Brothers had become undefeated fighters in the Hole.
Grudd and John employ a particular effective method of attack, in which Grudd holds back and uses his Flamer to attack the target, while John attacks the target directly with his Deathclaw Gauntlet. Thanks to an addiction to RadAway, they are both nearly impervious to the arena’s radiation traps.[Non-game 1]
Relationships
John is the brother of Grudd and Greg Bear.

Notes
- Faydra, the event coordinator for the Hole, comments on how the Bear Brothers' ferocity leads people to believe that they are "half way to Trog."[2] The brothers' description as aggressive and nearly uncontrollable does sound similar to the symptoms defining wildmen, but their allegience to Ishmael Ashur indicates they are not yet at that level.
- If the Lone Wanderer kills Grudd Bear first, John will sometimes take his flamer and use it against the player character.
Notable quotes
- "They're a couple of mean bastards. Hell, rumor has it that they're half way to trog as it is." – Faydra, describing John and his brother.
- "They're savage! They're brutal! They're here to keep this worker in his place -- the undefeated Bear Brothers! Let's find out if the newcomer can hold his own against real fighters! Release! Fight!" – Arena announcer
- "Those Bear Brothers never saw you comin', did they?" – Bone
Appearances
John Bear appears only in the Fallout 3 add-on The Pitt.

- ↑ 1.0 1.1 The Lone Wanderer: "How did you rebuild after the Scourge?"
Lord Ashur: "It wasn't actually that tough. The Scourge had cleared out a lot of Trogs, so we had space to move in. The Brotherhood had looted a lot, but they left even more behind as 'damaged goods.' And you can rebuild a lot out of 'damaged goods.' For example, they took one survivor, a kid they called 'Kodiak'. But they left his big brothers behind, because they were too wild and mean. But as it turns out, the Bear Brothers were some of my finest soldiers. At least, until they went up against you."
(Ishmael Ashur's dialogue) - ↑ The Lone Wanderer: "Who am I going to be fighting?"
Faydra: "Ashur says he wants to make this one good so he gave you the Bear Brothers. They're a couple of mean bastards. Hell, rumor has it that they're half way to Trog as it is. But I'm sure you'll do fine. Just fine."

Masters of "claw and paw" combat, John and Grudd Bear are man-mountains with a vicious winning streak in the Arena. Thanks to an addition to RadAway, they are almost impervious to the Arena's traps, and the siblings have developed an impressive plan of attack: one brother holds back, scorching the escaping foe with Flamer fire while the other rips the victim apart with a Deathclaw Gauntlet.""
