Gruber is a released slave and the champion of the Hole by 2277.

Gruber was once a Pitt slave, but he became one of the few to win his freedom through fighting in the arena.^[1] After winning his freedom, he continued to fight, ultimately advancing to the point where he is considered to be the best arena fighter in The Pitt. Prior to the Lone Wanderer’s arrival, he was undefeated in the arena.^[2] As a tested veteran of one-on-one combat, he is solely concentrated on furthering his career in the arena and keeping his rifle maintained.^{[Non-game 1]}

When the Lone Wanderer is set up to fight him as their final test in the arena, Faydra predicts that they will not survive.^[1]

Unsafe Working Conditions: Gruber is the Lone Wanderer's final opponent in the Hole, and will open fire as soon as the round begins. One will need to kill him to finish the arena battles.
