Jaye Vo

Remember the days when you could walk up to someone and get judged by the qualities of your face? How bright your eyes were, the cleanliness of your skin, how much of a smile you were willing to crack. You do remember. Because those days are still here. A stranger approaches in the Wasteland, and they need to make a judgment: friend or foe. Well, most see the face of a monster and find that... a little hard to trust. Even those who aren't actively hostile, well, they aren't likely to offer you the same opportunities as the next lucky human. You want those opportunities back? Come to me and I'll make sure they never know it's a walking corpse that's talking to them.

Jaye Vo is a member of the Revenants at Radiant Hills in Appalachia in Fallout 76, introduced in the Ghoul Within update.

Background

Jaye grew up in poverty before the Great War, and found refuge in pre-War fashion magazines. The power of beauty and fashion compelled Jaye, giving her confidence and a desire to strive for greatness.[1] Though she worked toward this goal of being beautiful before the bombs dropped,[2] post-War radiation and the process of ghoulification transformed her dramatically. Although she does somewhat lament losing the traditional notion of beauty in her face and body from becoming a ghoul,[3] she rejects any pity given her way.[4]

Rather than delude herself by pretending to be the "next Marilyn Monroe" with a ghoulified face,[4] Jaye prefers to face reality and instead focus on creating beautiful things and sharing them with others. She aspires for the "Vo catalogue" to one day spread throughout the wasteland, even if people have no idea the fashion was designed by a ghoul.[3] She sees fashion as an art form, and even if not all of its avenues are open to her now that she is a ghoul, she can still continue to learn, invent and share her style with others.[3] However, deep down, she does still wish she could be "normal" and human again, even if this is not an opinion shared by some other ghouls.[5] She continues to resent her ghoul appearance[6][7] and has some slightly judgmental tendencies, if others have not consulted her for their fashion choices.[8][9]

Jaye has since joined the faction known as the Revenants, which accepts only ghoul members. There, in addition to her existing talents as a stylist, she also serves as the group's "disguise expert,"[10] creating clothes that ghouls can use to obscure their face, hiding behind masks and other similar items, so that humans are more willing to trust them, without having to confront a monstrous, irradiated face.[11] During her time with the faction, she befriended Eugenie, another ghoul who later left the group; at least one letter from Kevan Asherton to Eugenie provided an update on Jaye, specifically her discovery of a guitar and subsequent inability to tune it.[12] At some point, Eugenie wrote Jaye a letter encouraging her to continue her pursuits in fashion. However, Eugenie also addressed Jaye's insecurities about being a ghoul, reassuring Jaye that becoming a ghoul was not her fault and that she is okay how she is. Eugenie encouraged Jaye to return to her family at some point to show them what she had become; even if they were no longer proud of her, it would let Jaye know that they were no longer "worth a damn."[13]

Residing in Radiant Hills, Jaye has set up a studio in her own corner of the bunker where she works on clothes, disguises and other items,[14] such as her own homemade shoes.[15] She is frequently in search of cloth and other fabrics,[16][17] resorting to more creative methods when supplies run low.[18] She dismisses common wasteland fashion as "overdone,"[19] and says that her fellow ghouls can be the canvas for her art, if they so desire.[20] She remains committed to the belief that, in spite of the world's many disadvantages, the right attitude can take a person anywhere.[21]

Other interactions

After transforming into a ghoul during the quest A Fresh Pair of Genes, the player must speak to Jaye Vo and acquire a disguise in order to continue with main faction quests, if they have not already been completed. The disguise consists of a drifter outfit and a sack hood variant. Once the disguise has been equipped, the player can also use power armor alongside it. One must select the dialogue option with Jaye to equip the disguise, do whichever quests they would like, and then return to Jaye at Radiant Hills to remove the disguise. Jaye's disguise is necessary for interacting with the following quest lines:

Appearances

Jaye Vo appears only in Fallout 76. She was first mentioned in the Once in a Blue Moon update, as part of Eugenie's letter, before making a full appearance in the Ghoul Within update.

Behind the scenes

Although not clarified in-game, Jonathan Rush stated during the March 2025 developer AMA that Jaye's disguises also include ways to mask a ghoul's smell and hide their voice, which is why other face-hiding apparel cannot supplant Jaye's work.[Non-game 1]

  1. Vault 76 dweller: "How'd you come to be such a fashion connoisseur?"
Jaye Vo: "Pre-war magazines. I was obsessed with them growing up. All I had ever seen before was filth. Nobody cared about... anything, except fighting over the next scrap. No dignity, no ambition. Then one day I found this fashion magazine. There was page after page of these women dressed in all shapes and colors. Confident and beautiful... they were almost from another world! You looked at them and could tell that they had strived for something. And that made me want to strive for something. Beauty has power. The power to amaze, to inspire, to transform. I... Well, unfortunately, not everyone has that power available to them. But I still try, you know. To give ghouls the power to live normally, even if they can't... amaze, anymore."

  2. Vault 76 dweller: "Do you really think those fashion models were happy? Most performances have a price."
Jaye Vo: "Of course they have a price. I never rolled out of bed looking like a fashion icon, even before the whole... ghoul development. Anything worthwhile has a price. Isn't it still better to shoot for greatness? And I mean that regardless of circumstances. I may not be beautiful anymore, but I can still create beauty."

Jaye Vo: "Ugh. I'm disgusted at myself for vomiting out my personal issues. Thanks for the sympathy, but do me a favor and forget I said anything sentimental. The point is, fashion is art. Whatever avenues for expressing that are unavailable to me now, I can still learn, invent, and share it with others. Who knows? Maybe one day the whole Wasteland will be wearing the Vo catalogue. And they'll never know that I'm a ghoul."

Jaye Vo: "Oh, please. Spare me the pity. I don't want to hear one more time that it's the inside that counts. I look like what I look like. And yeah, most days I'm not too happy about that. It's completely unfair. Why me, out of all the ungrateful bastards out there who would gladly sell their whole head of hair for a roasted Radrat? But I'd rather face reality than pretend I can still be the next Marilyn Monroe. It's not like I can't still create things that are beautiful."

  1. Fallout 76 March 2025 developer AMA
Jonathan Rush: "Jaye is an absolute master of disguises. Like, for us to think, 'oh, we could just do Jaye's work by just putting on a Fasnacht mask' is doing Jaye an immense disservice. Jaye is good at what they do—they're excellent, as a matter of fact. They can mask that smell, they can hide your voice—there's no limit to what Jaye can do."
