Appearance

Viernes is a large metallic Dragon with gold scales, with the body shape of a sphinx and "feathered" wings. He has two backward protruding horns, his head resembles that of a pharaoh's nemes along with a beard, with two halo-like rings over his head.[1] In his human form, Viernes has a muscular body with long light colored hair. He highly resembles an Egyptian pharaoh, wearing a nemes with a beard, armlets on both biceps and bracelets, and a chest plate. He has a pair of wings on his back.[2]

Personality

Viernes has shown to be a haughty and arrogant Dragon being actively hostile towards humans with a superiority complex; even stated them as unworthy to face a Dragon God.[3] He selfishly puts himself above even the other Dragons Gods, as the concept of Duke Barbaroa who acted as his voice sought to make them his servants using the original Duke's creation, Athena, to control them.[4]

After being "activated" and revived by Ignia and the Luso and Ennie Signario's Dragonization Magic, he seems to have lost his mind like all the other Dragon Gods and become more aggressive.[5]

History

Viernes existed as far back as the Dragon King Festival and, like the other Five Dragon Gods, fled to Guiltina in fear of Acnologia.[6]

At some point, Viernes used Alchemy to become the concept of the Alchemist Guild Gold Owl; merging his being into the guild's building and his voice becoming a conceptual copy of Duke Barbaroa,[7] who then supplanted the real Duke as guild Master and manipulated Athena into joining Gold Owl as a weapon against the other Dragon Gods.[8] [9]

Gold Alchemy: This form of alchemy allows Viernes to transmute the element of gold. With it, he can convert anything, even living things into gold, be it physical contact or from a nearby distance.[15] Anything that's been turned to gold is also under his control, morphing its shape for whatever usage he want,[16] even seemingly levitate gold turned targets and control its movements.[17] (Unnamed)

Mind Control: By unknown means, whether through Magic or Alchemy, Viernes is capable of mind controlling others. one of those this ability was used on described it as having one's mind stolen, though it doesn't appear as though those effected by it actually follow Viernes mindlessly. If Viernes were to be defeated, anyone affected by this ability would be released, seemingly only slightly remembering the time they spent under his control.[22]

Immense Durability: Viernes' durability is strong enough to take on the combined attacks of Team Natsu, the Twin Dragons of Sabertooth and Jellal Fernandes.[23]

Immense Magic Power: As one of the Five Dragon Gods, Viernes possesses an immense amount of Magic Power which is said to be equal to that of Acnologia.[24]

Trivia

Viernes concept sketches
  • Viernes is the Spanish word for "Friday", which coincides with the elemental meaning of Friday in Japanese culture, that being of "Gold Day", the element that Viernes utilizes.
  • In the bonuses of Volume 17 concept art shows that he had more avian features (such as having a beak and feathers) as well as a tail in the shape of a cobra. According to the same bonuses, Viernes was inspired by the Egyptian gods Ra or Thoth and would be "entirely or almost entirely golden".
