The Abyss is a location in Everhood. It is first seen near the beginning of the game after the Post Mortem fight, and again during the Normal ending after traveling through the Cottage.
Appearance
The Abyss is a pitch-black location with a colorful glowing stone path. During the second visit, the Abyss is filled with shallow water, which becomes deeper when straying away from the main path.
Story
When Red first dies in the Incinerator, they experience the Post Mortem fight and end up in the Abyss. They travel along the glowing path, reaching a Red Gnome who takes them into the Gnome fight. During the fight, Buddha, the Dev Gnomes, and the Cube appear, followed by an offer to hear the First Absolute Truth.
After completing the Lost Spirit's Revenge fight, Pink returns to the Abyss through the Cottage. When they stray from the main path, the cold, murky water constantly threatens to drown them. Their body will periodically sink partway into the water, and they complain that the water feels painful and freezing cold. Each time this happens, the player has the choice to either "Let it happen" or to "Resist." Attempting to immediately sink will cause Pink to automatically resist it, but afterwards, they will encounter Frog, which will allow the player to insist and get Pink to truly sink.
If the player instead refuses to sink and continues to wander around the Abyss, they can listen to the spirits of various characters express their regrets. They encounter visions of Green Mage, Purple Mage with Zob and Rob, Gold Pig and Blue Thief, Rasta Beast, Professor Orange, and finally Frog after exhausting all of the available dialogue.
