History

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance

It starts out in space as a giant ball with eyes similar to Leliel's shadow. NERV is unable to pinpoint the place where it will fall, it uses its A.T. Field to alter the light and velocity while falling. Then, when it is about to land, it begins to resemble its TV anime counterpart, only this version is larger and has feathery spikes trailing it. When Shinji reaches the point where the angel will touch the ground, he uses Unit-01's A.T. Field to stop its descent, and a humanoid body comes out of the central eye and pierces Unit-01's hands, hurting Shinji too. Its core is also movable in great velocity and avoids attacks from Unit-02 until Rei in Unit-00' is able to physically grab hold of it and stop it (greatly hurting herself in the process). Unit-02 uses both progressive knives to damage the core, but only after using a knee attack to shove one of the knives clear through the core it is finally destroyed. When defeated, it retracts its eye shaped feathers like an insect and explodes into a massive geyser of bloody liquid and floods a great portion of the city.

Development

Among the production crew, the Angel was nicknamed the "Falling Angel". The overall concept is based on how the Angel was depicted in episode 12 of the TV series but was revamped incorporating new ideas. Takashi Watanabe first presented numerous ideas on the basic structure of the Angel and how its shape would go through numerous transitions. At this stage, the Angel design was more organic in nature, but Mahiro Maeda introduced the idea of introducing surrealist elements in the design, and thus emphasis was placed on artistic aesthetics. Maeda proposed to have the sphere blossom open as it did in the film and how numerous humanoid figures would appear once the trumpets of the Apocalypse sound off. The sequence featuring the humanoid center of the Angel locking grips with Unit-01 was created using hand drawn animation. The Unit-01 was created using hand drawn animation. The humanoid section of the Angel was first designed by Yoshitoh Asari and then Takeshi Honda refined the design to befit the needs of animation production. This was an Angel that was the culmination of numerous individual's contributions. Representing a huge Angel sized over several kilometers across was very difficult to do in CG and many sections, such as the organic physiological reaction of the Angel, [its "death twitch"], had to be redone over and over again.[1]
