History

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance

During the Katsuragi Expedition, a contact experiment was conducted, resulting in the destruction of the South Pole and the release of the Adams. This event would later be called the Second Impact and the true nature of its cause would be hidden from the public. Fifteen years later in the present day, the four crosses of the Adams are still present in the center of the crater at the South Pole.

During Evangelion Unit-01 battle with the Tenth Angel, and Unit-01 shoots a beam with its eyes at the Angel to destroy its AT-Field, during which one can observe a third eye shooting a beam from the forehead. Later, when Unit-01 enters a state of pseudo-evolution in an attempt to save Rei Ayanami, inadvertently beginning the Near Third Impact, the unit can be seen with a third eye, making it greatly resemble one of the Adams, though the reason for this similarity is never elaborated on further.

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo

During the Evangelion Mark.09's assault on the Wunder, the unit is referred to as an "Adams' Vessel". Later in the film, the unit is also referred to as the "Wunders' original master" implying some connection between the Adams, the Vessels and the Wunder.

The Evangelion 13 is also referred to as one of the surviving Adams.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time

Continuing on from the last film, it is revealed that there were 5 Adams, each sealed within the Vessel of the Adams, those being Evangelion Mark.09-A, Evangelion Mark.10, Evangelion Mark.11, Evangelion Mark.12 and Evangelion 13. The four first Adams (Mark.09-12) are the masters of NERV made warships, the NHG Erlösung, the NHG Erbsünde, the NHG Gebet and the WILLE controlled Wunder. When used together, they possess the ability to open the Doors of Guf leading to the Minus Space.

Mari upon sinking the remaining NHG ships, says that the "Lilin won't be needing you anymore, rest in peace, Adams".

Trivia

  • One of the Adams has a third eye. This motif reappears with the Unit-01 as the Radiant Giant at Near Third Impact. While some kind of link between the two is implied, there is no way at present to know what that might entail. It is possible the connection was either changed for future movies or was a Red herringWP . Alternatively, it may simply have been a callback to the End of Evangelion where Unit-01, having turned into the tree of life, ended up being absorbed into the giant Adam/Lilith/Rei hybrid via its third eye.
  • IPEA's logo also depicts a 3 eyed giant.
  • The number of Adams and the association of a cross with each of them may be a reference to the Ultraman series, especially the episode of Ultraman Ace with the debut of Ace Killer and Baraba. The script referring to them as "giants of light" may also be in reference to the Ultramen - as they are frequently referred to as "giants of light".
    • The Adams also all have unique cores, whose unique details reference several Ultramen of the Ultra Brothers. From left to right: A core on the chest, surrounded by six red dots (Ultraman Zoffy, the leader; his Color Timer is surrounded by Specium studs in a curved line); A plain core on the chest (Ultraman); a core on the chest, surrounded by a ring (Ultraman Jack, whose silver Specium body pattern is the same as Ultraman's with an additional silver outer line; also somewhat resembles Ultraman Orb's Color Timer); and a small core on the forehead, similar to a third eye (Ultraseven; he lacks a Color Timer and instead has a Beam Lamp on his forehead).
    • Following this pattern of Ultra Brothers references, one could assume that the fifth unseen Adam (which would become Evangelion 13) is the counterpart of Ultraman Ace, as Evangelion 13 initially requires two pilots and Ace initially has two simultaneous human hosts.
  • Given that the Rebuild films seemingly draw from the biblical book of Daniel, what with the references to Nebuchadnezzar, a possible explanation for there being 5 Adams might lie in the dream of the beasts that appear in Daniel chapter 7. In it, 4 chimeric beasts representing various kingdoms appear followed by a fifth beast; “a little horn with a boastful mouth” who takes power from the other beasts. The beasts attempt to wage war on God’s kingdom only to be defeated by the messiah. Thus it could be said that the Adams used to make the ships are the 4 beasts, Gendo and Evangelion 13 are the fifth beast, and Unit-01 and Shinji are the messiah.[citation needed]
