Sigil

Sigil (also styled SI6IL) is an "unofficial" episode WAD for Doom and The Ultimate Doom that was released in limited editions on May 22, 2019, while the free release appeared on May 31, 2019. It was announced at Doom's 25th anniversary on December 10, 2018 by its designer, John Romero. Although billed as a megawad with 18 maps, Romero clarified in an interview that each of the nine single-player levels includes a separate deathmatch arena, making it a standard episode. The levels were created using Doom Builder 2.

Background

Sigil is John Romero's 'fifth episode' (mod) to the Original Doom. However, is is considered unofficial to the original canon[1][2]. Note: Sigil is now included as its own game in the Doom I + Doom II release, but still listed as an 'unofficial' campaign in its in-game description.

After killing the Spiderdemon at the end of Thy Flesh Consumed, your next stop is Earth - you must save it from hellspawn that is causing unimaginable carnage. But Baphomet glitched the final teleporter with his hidden sigil whose eldritch power brings you to even darker shores of Hell. You must fight through this stygian pocket of evil to confront the ultimate harbingers of Satan, then finally return to become Earth's savior.
SIGIL was designed by id co-founder and lead designer of DOOM and DOOMII, John Romero to celebrate DOOM's 25th anniversary. Created as an unofficial fifth episode, SIGIL follows Thy Flesh Consumed, and is designed to be even more difficult, throwing tight combat arenas, constrained ammo, and new twists and traps. SIGIL's new visual style sets it apart from the other four episodes, with a heavy emphasis on satanic imagery, and features more detail than was possible under the original engine limitations.
Created alongside collaborators in the DOOM community, SIGIL represents the spirit that continues to power the DOOM community for so long.

As described on Steam:

Sigil: Created by id Software co-founder, John Romero, and released as an episode-sized mod consisting of 18 new maps, Sigil fits in between the timelines of DOOM (1993) and DOOM II. Baphomet, the gatekeeper of Hell, “glitched the final teleporter with his hidden sigil, whose eldritch power brings you to even darker shores of Hell. You fight through this stygian pocket of evil to confront the ultimate harbingers of Satan, then finally return to become Earth’s savior.”

SIGIL was named as a runner-up at the 2019 Cacowards, although in a break from tradition, its write-up was not contained to the sidebar, instead sharing a "Runner-up Spotlight" page with Doom 3: Phobos. On December 11, 2019, Bethesda announced support for Sigil as the first in a series of curated community WADs to be featured as an add-on for the Doom Classic Unity port, added alongside the official Final Doom and "No Rest for the Living". The first version of the game allowing users to download SIGIL was released as an update on January 9, 2020. A sequel, Sigil II (tentative title), was announced in August of 2021.

Story

Sigil continues from the fourth episode, Thy Flesh Consumed, with the following story line:

"After killing the Spiderdemon at the end of E4M8 (Unto the Cruel), your next stop is Earth — you must save it from hellspawn that is causing unimaginable carnage. But Baphomet glitched the final teleporter with his hidden sigil whose eldritch power brings you to even darker shores of Hell. You fight through this stygian pocket of evil to confront the ultimate harbingers of Satan, then finally return to become Earth’s savior."
