Ned Diggety

Nedward "Ned" Diggity is a minor supporting character of the animated series Pepper Ann. He is the teenage cousin of Pepper Ann Pearson who loves cheese and always seems to be eating it around the house.

Background

Ned Diggity lives in the same duplex as Pepper Ann Pearson, his younger cousin, whom is both embarrassed by and envious of Ned. Ned is most often seen lounging around the city, if not at home eating cheese, which he has an unusual fondness for. He is shown to have congestion issues (possibly as a result of eating so much cheese), as he speaks in a nasal lisp and often snorts or retches. Throughout the series, he mainly serves to show the dysfunctional extended family of Pepper Ann and for a quick cutaway gag.

Ned's most notable role was in "License to Drive", where Pepper Ann served on him hand and foot in the hopes that she will get a ride from him in his "new set of wheels". To her disappointment, they were literal wheels for his bicycle. Ned found the mix-up amusing and offered Pepper Ann a ride to school, nonetheless. As shown in a Disney Adventures comic, Ned does learn how to drive eventually, but he proves to be a rather rough rider.

Ned has been shown to have an interest in arts and sports, as he is seen doing slam poetry on cheese for a talent show in "The Environ-Mentals"; Ned also owns a pair of "Megablades 3000" roller skates and ice skates and is implied to play hockey in "Megablades of Grass". Like his father, JoJo, Ned is shown to have an interest in football, as they attempt to watch the game in "Thanksgiving Dad", and even has a football helmet in his otherwise cheese-themed bedroom. On the other hand, Ned is implied to not be invested in his mother, Janie's environmental efforts.

Ned is completely absent in "The Finale", though based on his personality, it would not be surprising if he still lived in the other half of the duplex.

Personality

At first glance, Ned seems like an unassuming and dim-witted character, which sometimes puts him at odds with his family. However, it is shown in "License to Drive" that Ned is smarter than he seems; being well-aware of his family's surprise before his birthday, as well as Pepper Ann's attempts to kiss up to him. Ned can be just as opportunistic as his cousin; he almost ruined Thanksgiving after deliberately disobeying his aunt and mother by eating all of the yams (albeit more rooted in hunger than selfishness), and later takes advantage of Pepper Ann's less-than-altruistic efforts to "bond" with him.

Similar to Moose, Ned's awkward personality makes him a source of embarrassment for Pepper Ann, indirectly calling him a "freak" in "Ziterella", and "a waste of a teenager" in "License to Drive". Ironically, she is shown to be envious of Ned, as he is implied to be a bit spoiled in comparison; even worse is that Ned doesn't always appreciate his parent's and aunt's efforts, again mainly due to his unassuming nature. In spite of this, he does genuinely care for his family and does his best to empathize with his cousin's misguided motives (wanting to be seen as cool), despite not really being concerned about social status himself.

Physical Appearance

Ned is a gawky, tall Caucasian boy with a big nose, and a black flat-top haircut, which is almost always covered by a green and orange hat which slunks over his eyes. He wears a greyish-blue shirt covered by a gold and red coat with a "SAL" nametag, along with baggy beige sweatpants, and white sneakers with grey-blue soles and blue lightning bolts on them. Ned's baggy clothes give him a stout appearance, although he is shown to be thinner in other clothes. As one of the few (older) teens in the cast, Ned is taller than most of the kids, just as tall as his mother, and only notably being shorter than Cissy Rooney.

In "Megablades of Grass", Ned is shown wearing a red and jet-black hockey helmet, with matching shoulder-pads and kneepads to compliment his Megablades 3000s. When winter falls at the end of the episode, he is shown adorning a baggy red coat over his shirt, with silver and grey ice skates.

In "The Environ-Mentals", Ned is shown wearing beatnik attire, with a greyish-blue sweater, beige tights, tan sandals and a light-brown coat, with his hat replaced by a matching beret. He is shown to be thinner than in his normal attire, likely due to the clothes being tighter.

In "Cat Scan", Ned is revealed to wear a yellow shirt with cheese hole patterns (similar to the grey-blue one he wears normally), which he presumably uses for nightwear.

Trivia

  • Ned's full name, Nedward, is clearly meant to be a gag on the fact that Ned is usually short for Edward.
  • Ned's birthday is revealed to be February 24, 1982.
  • Ned is shown to have black hair, likely passed down from his grandfather.
  • Ned has only ever had one major role. Most of his appearances are minor (often non-speaking) roles, or background cameos, if not just being mentioned.
