Mrs. Andersen

This article is about Riley Andersen's mother from Inside Out. For Bonnie Anderson's mother from the Toy Story franchise, see Mrs. Anderson.

Jill Andersen is a supporting character in the Disney/Pixar Inside Out franchise. She is Riley's mother and Bill's wife.

Background

Personality

Mrs. Andersen is very kind and motherly, acting as the support center for her family, when they get through tough times, like moving to San Francisco. There are times when she isn't patient with her husband because of his oblivious personality (believing she shouldn't have turned down her chance to marry a handsome Brazilian copter pilot), but she still loves him. She also loves Riley and does her best to understand Riley, especially as their move negatively affects Riley's personality.

Since Sadness seems to be the leader of her emotions (but is not a weeping mess like Riley's Sadness), it is possible this is where her understanding and compassionate nature comes from as sadness represents the ability to empathize with others or that she might've had a rough past.

Physical appearance

She has fair skin, brown eyes, noticeably wide hips and a stout posterior, and long brown hair, usually in a low ponytail. She wears red-framed glasses and likes to wear long-sleeved shirts and sweaters.

Appearances

Inside Out

Mrs. Andersen first appears at the hospital where she gives birth to Riley. Shortly after Riley's birth, Mrs. Andersen and her husband welcome their newborn daughter into the world, immediately falling in love with their baby girl. Over the years, when Riley grew up, she and her family moved from Minnesota to San Francisco to start a new life. Later when Riley felt depressed about the way the house looked, she suggests her mother to go to a pizza place, so her mother takes Riley there only for broccoli pizza to be the only pizza served there. After leaving, Mrs. Andersen recaps that the pizza place was not as bad as the soup she had at a Nebraska diner, just as she asks Riley about what was her favorite part during the past road trip, which she answers to her mother that she liked the dinosaur attraction.

Later, when Riley and her family move to another home, Mrs. Andersen approaches her daughter and tells her that her father is stressed about his new company running and through all the confusion she had, she tells Riley that she had a positive attitude so that she could make her father happy. The next day, Riley's mother gets her daughter ready for school, excited that she could make new friends at school just before she heads off to school by herself. During dinner with the family, Riley's mother gives out her daughter the good news that she found a junior hockey league with tryouts being available after school, which Riley becomes disinterested into hockey tryouts (which Disgust caused inside her mind, due to Joy being absent). Later, Mrs. Andersen discusses with her daughter of how school went, which Riley starts becoming cranky, much to Mrs. Andersen's shock and her husband insulted by her cranky attitude.

Later, Riley's mother takes her daughter to the hockey rink, hoping that Riley would make new friends. However, Riley was unable to score a goal during hockey and returns to her mother, feeling cantankerous and pragmatic about it while upset with her mother. Furthermore, Riley plans to purchase a ticket to a bus leading her back to Minnesota while her mother is talking on the phone, as she plans to return to Minnesota by herself. Later, Riley's mother and father enter their daughter's room to see if she is all right, only to find out that Riley is leaving San Francisco to get to a bus station leading to Minnesota. Riley's mother calls her on her phone in an attempt to get into contact with her, but she puts it on hold as she is planning to leave San Francisco in order for her to return to Minnesota.

Furthermore, when Riley returns home with Sadness saving her life by turning the Core Memories from yellow to blue, Riley emotionally reunites with her mother and father, explaining that they didn't want her to leave but in fact that she misses Minnesota, causing Riley to change her mind. Riley's parents also remember that they missed spending their lives at Minnesota before they moved to San Francisco just as Riley tearfully reunites with her parents and they reconcile . In the epilogue, Mrs. Andersen and her husband are at the hockey rink cheering on their daughter playing for the Foghorns, just before Riley participates in a hockey game.

Riley's First Date?

Mrs. Andersen and her husband begin to suspect that Riley is going on a date with Jordan, planning to ask Riley about this. She then describes Jordan as an awesome person and thinks that Jordan is a good friend that Riley would make. Riley then reacts in disgust, thinking that it's not a date with Jordan himself, but her conversation with her mother is interrupted when she hears listening to rock music, but not before Riley starts dating with Jordan. Mr. Andersen then describes Jordan as a good person, which his wife replies that he is kind to him. After Mrs. Andersen kisses her husband, he decides to fix the table.

Inside Out 2

Mrs. Andersen appears in the sequel, only with a much smaller role. She is first seen watching Riley play hockey alongside Mr. Andersen. Both parents were cheering for their daughter and felt proud for her win at that game. When Riley and her family return home, Mrs. Andersen and her husband are proud of her daughter's victory in winning the championship. Riley worriedly asks her parents of what happens if she made a mistake earlier, which they tell her not to worry about what happened during the game, just before going to bed.

The next day, Mrs. Andersen approaches her daughter who is worried that she didn't pack up yet which she becomes upset with her mother that she is the worst. Riley's mother explains to her daughter that she is just trying to adapt to her new life as a teenager, telling her the happy moments of when she saw the moment a caterpillar turned into a butterfly at a park, which a frustrated Riley berates her. Riley, having calmed down, packs up for hockey camp with her friends Bree and Grace. Mrs. Andersen later appears having a trip with her family as Riley is being taken at hockey camp. As Riley and her friends arrive at hockey camp, her mother asks her if she has the things she needs for hockey, which her daughter tells her that she does while her father asks her to call him if she needs her just before being approached by Val Ortiz.

After the main events of the film, Mrs. Andersen is last seen eating dinner with her family, where she questions about Riley's time at hockey camp. Riley's deadpan answer to that somewhat disappointed Mrs. Andersen herself.

Dream Productions

In this miniseries, Mrs. Andersen provides her old pink dress for Riley, which is accompanied with puffy sleeves, for her daughter's prom night. Riley herself personally hates it because of its more childish appeal, and considering that she was 12 years old at that moment.

This, in turn, becomes the basis of the series' main conflict, where Riley gets numerous nightmares for wearing that same dress Mrs. Andersen bought for her. This issue has also affected Paula Persimmon's career as a veteran dream director, given the matter of having to balance out euphoria and maturity in Riley's dreams now that she's close to hitting puberty.

Trivia

  • Her full name is given in the Inside Out: The Essential Guide.[2] Her credit card and Disney.com profile also state that her name is Jill Andersen.[1]
  • It appears her Sadness is the leader of her emotions as she is in the center of her control panel, similar to how Joy is the leader of Riley's emotions as she is in the center of her control panel.
  • An image of her can be seen as a queen in Imagination Land's house of cards.
  • On two occasions in the first film, she was seen wearing a beige cardigan with multicolored bands, whose colors are the same as those of emotions; and in addition to having the colors of the basic Emotions; red (Anger), yellow (Joy), green (Disgust), blue (Sadness) and purple (Fear). Additionally, orange (Anxiety), turquoise (Envy), indigo (Ennui) and pink (Embarrassment) are also included, of course foreshadowing the new Emotions in Inside Out 2.
