Firehawks

The Firehawks are a group of professional hockey players in Disney/Pixar's 2024 animated feature film Inside Out 2.

Background

Physical appearances

Main article: Val Ortiz
Val Ortiz is a slim Latina teenager with olive skin, brown eyes, and long brunette wavy hair with a single red streak. She also wears red eyeshadow. Her attire is that of royal-blue, one-shouldered sweater over a gray-trimmed black bra, black sweatpants, and gray-and-white tennis shoes with light red details. She also accessorizes with a golden necklace with her name as the pendant, and gold piercings in her upper right ear and both her lower ears. When she is out on the ice, she wears the hockey camp jersey uniform with her hair tied in a low ponytail, and with her makeup wiped off.

"Oh, cool. Where in Michigan are you from?"

- Dani asking Riley where she came from.
Dani is a pear-shaped teenager with olive skin like Val, brown eyes, and short, black, messy hair with a single red streak. Her clothing consists of a navy blue Firehawks jacket with the insignia on it, over a dark magenta sports bra that doesn't cover her stomach. Additionally, she wears a pair of dark purple sweatpants with diagonal magenta stripes on it. Her accessories are a set of piercings that are found on her left eyebrow and on her right and left ear.

"So, Michigan, who's your favorite band?"

- Ally asking Riley which music she likes the most.
Ally is a round-bodied teenager with caucasian skin, blue eyes, and short, blonde, wavy hair with a single red streak. Her attire includes a navy blue Firehawks jacket with the insignia on it, black sweatpants, and a vertical-pattern orange beanie, which could be seen as her key design trait. Like Dani and Val, she has piercings in both of her ears as well as her nose.

"Whether she wants you on the team..."

- Sofia bullies Riley about Coach Roberts' notebook, where she thinks about her.
Sofia is a thin African-American teenager with dark skin, brown eyes, and curly black hair with a red streak going through two strands. She wears a navy blue Firehawks jacket with the insignia on it, black sweatpants. Her sole accessory is a pair of purple cat-eye glasses.

'You mean the camp scrimmage?"

- Nour asking if Riley was referring to the big game.
Nour is a skinny Muslim teenager with bright-colored skin and greenish-hazel eyes. In terms of clothing, she wears a navy blue hijab and a red scarf beneath to match the red hair streak of the other members. Like the other Firehawks, she also wears a navy blue jacket with lighter navy on the bottom, a horizontal red line running across. Also like the others, her jacket has an insignia of the Fire Hawks on it.

Role

After the Foghorn's victory at the championship match of a hockey game, Coach Roberts invites Riley Andersen, Bree Young, and Grace Hsieh as last-minute volunteers to her 3-day hockey skills camp. Joy says that Riley will be able to join the high school team next year if they impress the Coach, which prompts Anger to don a Fire Hawks hat, saying that they are "a team that [he] can get behind." Enthusiastic, Riley, Bree, and Grace immediately accept her offer, as the Coach says that she will see them tomorrow.

As Riley arrives at Hockey Camp, while looking for her friends, she accidentally bumps into Valentina Ortiz, her hockey idol. Val asks Riley if she's okay and extends her hand out to lift her back up, to which Val tries to introduce herself, but Riley ecstatically begins listing off her accomplishments and favorite color, much to her surprise. Val recognized Riley as "the one Coach told us about" but accidentally misinterpreted her original state as Michigan rather than Minnesota, but Riley, driven by Anxiety, nervously lies about it thinking that she cannot correct Val. After Riley tried to touch her hair (at the insistence of Envy), and embarrassing herself because of it, Val invited Riley to come inside with her and "meet some of the other Fire Hawks," to which Riley apathetically responded that it sounded good because of Ennui.

In the locker room, Val introduces Riley to the other Fire Hawks (Dani, Ally, Sofia, and Nour) and tells them that Riley was originally from Michigan due to misinformation. In turn, Dani gets up and asks Riley where in Michigan she was from, to which Riley nervously states that she's from "all over." Dani thinks that where she comes from is cool and says to Riley, "See you out there." as Val invites Riley to sit with her and the other Fire Hawks. Even though Riley politely denies the request, saying that she wanted to save seats for Bree and Grace, Val shrugs it off and says it's okay either way. When Coach comes in and tells the girls to settle in, and sees Riley and her friends goofing off, Coach tells all of the girls to put their cell phones in her basket, which frustrates them in response. Additionally, when Coach says that the girls will be "skating lines" as punishment for Riley's reckless and unprofessional behavior, Val's friends don't have the strongest first impressions with Riley, becoming increasingly upset and perturbed by her actions.

During their breather after skating lines on the ice rink, Dani and the other Fire Hawks talk badly about Riley while she eavesdrops on the them, with Dani going so far as to say that Coach wouldn't put Riley on the team if she "can't get it together." Val comes to Riley's defense by sarcastically asking Dani if she "had it all together when she was a freshman" to which Dani replied by saying that she "wasn't that immature." Riley then comes out and apologizes to Val for getting the team in trouble with the Coach and having them skate lines and that she felt terrible that such an event has occurred. Val reassures Riley and says that it was okay and that she was "on Coach's radar" in that she gave Riley a hard time. She understands Riley by saying that she was glad that she came to talk with her and puts an arm on Riley, saying that they should "be on the same team later" with the other Fire Hawks. With Anxiety tearing out her Sense of Self, Riley abandons her friends and meets up with Val and the other Fire Hawks, with Val welcoming Riley to the team.

Early the next morning, when Riley was up to get in some more hockey practice, Val shares a similar interest and discusses with Riley on how she told the other Fire Hawks that she knew that Riley was Fire Hawks material, that she "[got] what it takes to be the best." That same morning, before breaking into their teams, Val also invites Riley to hang out with her and the other Fire Hawks where they'll order their own food and listen to music.
