The Macaques are characters featured in the Jungle Cruise attraction at the Disney Parks.
History
Background
These macaques are shown to live in an ancient temple representing Asia. They are shown interacting various treasures located within the temple and are one of the inhabitants lurking inside the ruins of an ancient temple, implying that they are curious of the objects they find inside the temple.
Development History
The macaque sequence was one of the scenes designed by the late Disney imagineer, Marc Davis and were created for the Magic Kingdom version of the attraction where they were placed inside the ruins of an ancient temple.
As of 2021, the controversial Trader Sam and Chief Nah-Mee scene was replaced by the "Trader Sam's Gift Shop" scene due to outdated cultural depictions of tribesmen where the animatronic monkeys were installed within the refurbishment. Despite this, the respective Trader Sam and Chief Nah-mee scenes still exist in Tokyo Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland respectively.
Appearances
Jungle Cruise
In the Magic Kingdom and in the pre-2014 Tokyo Disneyland version of Jungle Cruise, a group of macaques is seen interacting with various rare treasures inside the ancient temple where they are seen rummaging through the artifacts. Guests were able to escape the temple without disturbing any of the macaques.
As of the post-2014 revamp in Tokyo Disneyland, the macaques and the rest of the animatronic animals were removed inside the temple. Despite being removed from this version of the attraction, the likeness of a monkey is depicted for the magical medallion known as the Monkey of Cleverness and during the scene where the boat enters the Shir Lee Temple, the Monkey of Cleverness emblem randomly appears where it is heard screeching in which after this, a magical blast is emitted in it in which an illustration depicted on the wall featuring monkeys in it which represents ecology and nature just before the boat exits the temple to arrive at the elephant bathing pool area.
As of the post-2021 Magic Kingdom and Disneyland revamp, macaques are also seen in the place that used to be Chief Nah-Mee and Trader Sam respectively where it shows various macaques interacting with various supplies within the gift shop.
Living with the Land
Some of the animatronic animals seen in the rainforest sequence are identical to the ones used in the Jungle Cruise attraction - particularly the macaques seen in the ruins of the ancient temple from Jungle Cruise, as well as the crocodiles, implying that these figures were recycled from the attraction.
Skipper Canteen
Columns located within the Skipper Canteen building depict carvings of the monkeys interacting with vases reflecting the ones seen within the inside of the ruins of an ancient temple.
