Grow Up

"Grow Up" is the second segment of the first episode of The Weekenders. It premiered on February 26, 2000 alongside "Crush Test Dummies".

Synopsis

When Tino is caught bouncing on a bouncy house, he becomes determined to be older and mature. Trouble ensues when Tino's friends get annoyed with his new maturity.

Plot

Friday

Tino is excited because his mother is throwing him a "Vernal Equinox" party, essentially a birthday party centered around the earth's rotation of the sun, but with Tino at the center. The party is off to a great start when Mrs. Tonitini pulls out the biggest gift: a bounce house called a Jumpin' Jamboree. Tino excitedly hops around in it, until he notices that everyone is lookin at him weird. They laugh and Tish, Carver, and Lor inform him that a Jumpin' Jamboree is for five-year-olds. Tino's mother comforts him in his embarrassment. That night after having a nightmare, Tino decides that he now wants to make himself more grown up.

Saturday

In the morning, Tino adopts a business suit and tie and tells his mother that he is now going to be a grown up from now on. After reuniting with his friends at the ever changing pizza place, he tells them that he plans to start a website centered around web design. They agree to support his endeavors and name the new company, Something Else Industries. Tino's friends immediately enter quitting time, despite not having done any work, leaving Tino flabbergasted, as he adopts an older man mentality. Mrs. Tonitini attempts to talk Tino out of his forced adult behavior, but he insists on staying this way to wipe away his embarrassment.

Sunday

The next morning, Lor, Carver, and Tish show up at Tino's house, hoping he isn't mad at them for leaving work. Upon their arrival, Tino informs them that due to not taking Something Else Industries seriously, and their refusal to work, he had opted to replace them with actual businessmen, who comically are not bothered by Tino's youth. He gives them parting gifts with gold watches, which are actually just gelt, and refuses to partake in anymore fun activities with them. Lor, Carver, and Tish are angered over Tino betraying them and finally decide to put their foot down and help him.

The kids recruit Mrs. Tonitini to help them and she tricks Tino into going to the Funville arcade. Despite Tino's refusal to take part in the fun, he agrees to go. Sure enough, any of the things that the gang try to bring Tino to his sense backfire as he blames, nonexistent, body aches and business calls for preventing him from partaking. As they head back home, Lor, Carver, and Tish give in and try out the Jumpin' Jamboree, finding it fun. Tino finally overcomes his cynicism and joins them on the bounce house. The rest of the kids initially laugh, but soon join in as well, along with Mrs. Tonitini. Tino realizes that he should embrace his childhood while he still has it.
