"Devoted" is the tenth episode of the Disney+ Star Wars series Tales of the Empire. It premiered on May 4, 2024, and is the fourth episode of the second season.
Synopsis
Former Jedi Barriss Offee is recruited by the Empire.
Plot
Immediately after the completion of Order 66, Barriss Offee is released from prison by former Jedi Lyn Rakish, now an inquisitor known as the Fourth Sister. She reveals that the Jedi are no longer in charge, and Barriss will have a chance to prove her worth and loyalty to the Empire.
After her release, Barriss is taken to Nur, where she two other recruits. One of them attempts to flee and is promptly killed. Only Barriss and Dante remain. The two are then introduced to the Grand Inquisitor. He quickly senses Barriss' power and takes her on as a recruit, leaving the other to train with the Fourth Sister. While she is strong with the Force, Barriss Offee has very little experience with the Dark Side. She is taught to channel her anger into strength in her first lesson with the Grand Inquisitor. Although it does not start off well, she eventually makes clear progress and rivals even her new teacher's strength.
Despite making great progress, Barriss' toughest challenge comes after her bout with the Grand Inquisitor. Both Barriss and Dante perform well in their training, but only one of them will be given the rank of Inquisitor. To see who will join, Barriss and Dante are put against each other in a duel to the death with only one weapon between them. Early in the fight, Barriss attempts to sway her fellow recruit to convince him their fight is not necessary. However, her pleas fall on deaf ears. Her connection to the light eventually slips away, and she comes away victorious with a powerful Force choke against Dante.
After her victory, Barriss is officially the newest Inquisitor tasked to hunt down and kill the remaining Jedi. While this could not be the path she envisioned for herself upon questioning the morals of the Jedi Order, she is left without much of a choice.
