Level

Level Up Disgaea PSP

Level (abbreviated as Lv or Lvl) is a stat in the Disgaea series which is found in almost all role-playing games, serving as a numeric measure of a character's growth and capabilities.

When a character gains a certain amount of Experience they gain a level, which gives them higher stats and sometimes even new skills and Evilities. As a character gains more levels, more Experience will be required to level up. When a character levels up, a level up image will appear, a sound will play, they will take a leveling up pose for a few seconds, and starting in Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness, they will also shout a quip. Note that enemies can also increase in level during a battle, either by standing on a Geo Panel with the Level Up 10% effect or by killing your units.

The Disgaea series is notorious for its unusually high level cap of 9999, which Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny takes even further by making it possible to raise it to 99,999,999 (as Super Reincarnation upgrades). Reincarnating resets a character back to level 1, granting you stat bonuses based on how many levels you have lost due to all your reincarnations. This allows characters to keep gaining levels to reach strengths far beyond that of simply reaching the level cap once.

Disgaea 6 High Numbers

From Disgaea 2 onwards, the level of the unit controlled while out of battle(in the hub or Mystery Rooms) increases the height of their jump.

In Disgaea 6 only, the level of a unit increases the Base Power of their normal attacks, reaching 64,000,100% on level 99,999,999.

Stat Growth per Level

Every unit has a set of base stats values(visible during character creation and Reincarnation), determining the initial value and the growth for each stat. Base stats can be increased through Reincarnation (or Super Reincarnation in D6) or Class Proficiency, though with the following limitations:

  • In games up to Disgaea D2, base stats are capped at 255.
  • In Disgaea 5 and 7, base stats are capped at 1500. Stats obtained from level ups are capped at 10M for each stat other than HP.
  • In Disgaea 6, base stats have an initial cap of 255, but Super Reincarnation enhancements can increase it to a max of 4,000.

Base stats influence stats in the following ways:

  • On creation: each stat starts at BaseValue*(Level+1), multiplied by a random percentage between 47% and 53%.
  • On level up: each stat simply gains its BaseValue, multiplied by a random percentage between 40% and 50%(instead 45% and 55% in D3 and D4).
  • HP Bonus: HP gets an additional multiplier that makes it grow faster than other stats, eventually capping at 8 times bigger.

In Disgaea 6 only, units start at BaseValue*(Level+1000), then gain exactly BaseValue on each level. Both HP and SP get an additional multiplier that makes them grow faster.

Stat Multiplier

In Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, once a character crosses level 100 their equipment will start getting a stat multiplier based on the character's level. This applies to all equipment except Humanoid weapons, since those already get a bonus from Weapon Mastery.

The multipliers by level interval are as follows:

  • From 101 to 500: 0.5 + Level/200
  • From 501 to 2000: 2 + Level/500
  • From 2001 to 9999: 4 + Level/1000

Thus reaching a multiplier of approximately 14 on the level cap.

This multiplier returned for Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, though now it starts at level 1 and has different values per level:

  • From 1 to 100: 1 + Level/100
  • From 101 to 500: 1.5 + Level/200
  • From 501 to 2000: 3 + Level/500
  • From 2001 to 9999: 5 + Level/1000

Thus reaching a multiplier of approximately 15 on the level cap.

This multiplier then returned again for Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness, though now it's exclusive to Monster Weapons and the values have changed again:

  • From 1 to 100: 1 + Level/100
  • From 101 to 500: 1.75 + Level/400
  • From 501 to 2000: 2.5 + Level/1000
  • From 2001 to 9999: 5.75 + Level/1600

Thus reaching a multiplier of approximately 12 on the level cap.

This system is not present in games besides these 3.
