The Loom was a device created by Zoltun Kulle and Ayuzhan.

"Today, we begin the work, and when it is done, we will have changed the world. The Loom will be our masterpiece. I write this not out of arrogance, but surety of purpose. Matter is proportionally mutable to the energy expended; a candle may turn a book to ash, but it will never turn a mountain to sea. With the Loom, such limitations are meaningless. The Loom was an alchemical engine.[1] It had the power to shape elements and build tools[2] by converting one form of energy into another.[3]

History

"A demon slipped past our wards. I can see it as I write this: a red mist, wreathing the Loom. Suckling on it. It grows with each moment. A demon. A being of ether and feeling. And not even that. It shimmers in the light; it can barely maintain its form. And yet...we cannot remove it. No matter what we try, it only grows. Like a suppurated wound. Ayuzhan refuses to accept it...but our dream is ending."

The Loom was constructed by Kulle and Ayuzhan leagues beneath the Gatehall.[1] Their intention was that their creations could serve humanity. Constructs were created to protect and maintain the device.[2]

The Loom was compromised by the demon Malphas, who was able to bypass the Gatehall's wards and 'suckle' the device. No matter what Kulle and Ayuzhan tried, they could not remove him. Malphas spread from the Loom to Gatehall's siphons and healds, causing the constructs to turn on one another. By Kulle's estimate, within the month, the Loom would be unrecognizable. However, Ayuzhan refused to give up hope.[3]

Kulle destroyed the device before leaving the Gatehall, and urged Ayuzhan to give up on the project, telling his friend that without him, it would take lifetimes to repair. However, Ayuzhan was possessed by Malphas not long afterwards, who used Ayuzhan to do just that.[1]
