Spirits (霊) are creatures that possess only astral bodies that should exist between the souls and the physical bodies.[1][2] Upon the creature's death, their spirits and souls sometimes may linger in the world without returning to the cycle of transmigration. The dead do not pass on unless their regrets are fulfilled or too much time has passed.[3] In Lambda, the only ones able to see spirits are death mages, Undead, spiritualists, gods and their servants.[4] Unless the spirit gains a skill like spirit form.[5]
When the spirits of the dead with extremely strong emotional attachments are contaminated by miasma, they can become a type of undead monster called ghosts.[6][7][8][9]
"The memories and personalities of spirits become unstable over time. Their memories of everything other than the fixations they had in life or people they hate collapse as if dissolving, eventually disappearing completely. This can happen in the space of anywhere between a few days to several decades. And even if they do possess the memories and personalities that they had in life, there is no guarantee that they will not lie."[10]
Holy water can be used to prevent spirits from making contact with a spiritualist, though it's unnatural for it to erase them completely.[11] Scattering holy water around a place is a method priests of the Church of Alda use to remove spirits.[12] One can also prevent being haunted by the spirits of those one have killed by preemptively pouring holy water over one's entire body numerous times. This also works as an anti-spiritualist method, as it prevents any spirits from informing the spiritualist of one's whereabouts.[13] It later turns out that this is a lie that a spiritualist, who were abducted and forced to work with vampires, had told Birkyne. S/he had told them that they "could purify any spirits haunting them if they poured holy water on themselves, but in reality, there were so many spirits around them that they could not purify all of them with just that."[14]
The soul is the spirit's core. It appears as a shining sphere, the size of a marble, and is usually covered in spirit form. "If compared to a cell, this was the part that would contain genetic information." It's fragments appears as light particles dancing in the air, and the orb may emit a crumbling cracking sound if put under stress by soul break.[15]
Temperament
"The spirits of the dead were not often friendly or honest to other dead beings unless they were very sociable." So even if an undead asked the spirits a question, there is a high chance that the spirits wouldn't answer or just give meaningless answers.[16] This can be affected through the use of passive skills like Death-Attribute Charm[17] or Demon Path Enticement.[16]
