Minami Asagi (三波浅黄) was a member of the Bravers, codenamed Mage Masher (【メイジマッシャー】).[1]
In Earth, he had been a hot-blooded member of a sports club who cared about his friends, who had a somewhat totalitarian way of thinking. He also had a strong tendency of being influenced by the past life he had lived on Earth.[2]
Up until now, that had been a good thing. The past lives that the reincarnated individuals had lived on Earth and the things they had experienced there were a necessary foundation for them to not abuse their new lives and the powerful abilities that they had suddenly been given.[2]
However, the current problem had occurred because they had relied too much on this foundation and not seen what they needed to see.[2]
Appearance
In Asagi's initial appearance he had darkish hair spiked up and matching colored eyes. He wore a school uniform at the time of his passing and wore a Bravers outfit when with them.[?]
Personality
He's hot-blooded, but cares about his friends, who had a somewhat totalitarian way of thinking. He also had a strong tendency of being influenced by the past life he had lived on Earth, to the point of unable to mature into an adult during his Origin life.
He is extremely self-righteous and loves to boast about it, with a proclivity to force his moral compass on others. Agree with him on most things, and he's fun to be around. Disagree, and he will harass and hound you relentlessly until you cave in to his whims or it's impossible for him to come after you, and he doesn't really care which.
He honestly believes any human killing another is wrong, regardless of context, but has no problems using lethal force to enforce his will.[1]
He condemns the Eighth Guidance for daring to escape the labs performing horrific experiments on them and resenting the Bravers for killing their would-be rescuer, "The Undead" to then ship them off to the first group to ask for custody of them without checking, which turns out to be another death-attribute research lab. He does briefly have an epiphany when he confronts Baba Yaga as he's taking her into custody, lecturing her that she should be laughing and playing like the child she is, rather than engaged in "terrorism," and she retorts that she would have very much liked to do that, but even if she and the rest of the Eighth Guidance had gone into hiding, the politicians, wealthy conglomerates, and the backers of those horrid research labs, etc. coming at them, foaming at the mouth with blood-shot eyes for the "crime" of escaping on their own volition makes it all abjectly impossible, and then kills him while destroying herself so she won't be sent back for more cruel experiments. By the time he's in Lambda, this is all forgotten and he fixates on trying to neuter Van's ability to defend himself, at any cost.
He condemns Vandalieu for defending himself from murder attempts by Gugnir and Death Scythe, the latter of which he saw launch a completely unprovoked attack from Rodcorte's divine realm, dying as a direct result of Van's [Abyss] skill rebounding the attack itself.
Background
He was a member of the track-and-field club when he was on Earth, and maintains his sports-oriented mindset, still clinging on to past relationships on Earth. He wants the other reincarnated individuals to think like him as well.[?]
Because of this, Murakami Junpei thought of him as annoying even before thinking about leaving the Bravers.[?]
He was once strongly opposed to Amemiya Hiroto, who seemed to be nothing special other than having a name similar to a classmate’s, taking leadership. But after a fierce contest in which they compared their skills, he came to acknowledge Hiroto.[?]
He is not a bad person, but he has a strong tendency to force what he believes is right onto others and believes that this is the right thing to do; he has a suffocating personality. He is a Buddhist; he knows the phrase, “Everyone dies as equals.”[?]
He is one of the few Bravers who are physically talented, and he has mastered numerous martial arts.[?]
Incidentally, Vandalieu has a top-tier dislike for him in particular among the reincarnated individuals. This is the result of Asagi having good intentions and repeatedly trying to interfere with Amamiya Hiroto on Earth, a ‘classmate who was wasting his youth.’ Despite that, Asagi doesn’t remember Amamiya Hiroto because Hiroto was just one of the many whom Asagi perceived to be in need of guidance. Perhaps this is similar to bullies not remembering the victims they bullied once they become adults.[?]
Chronology
Strongly angry at Murakami for betraying the Bravers, he joined the decisive battle against the Eighth Guidance. There, he was burned to death by Baba Yaga's suicidal attack, who used her own dying body as bait.[3][4]
One year after he was reincarnated into Lambda, Asagi intervened in the emigration negotiations of Kanako's group, and negotiated with Vandalieu to abandon his death-attribute magic, which of course ended in failure.[5]
After that, he has been searching for a way to counter Vandalieu, working with Zean in the Birgitt Duchy in the Orbaume Kingdom.[6]
Powers and Abilities
Mage Masher
His cheat-like ability is Mage Masher which when active, it allows him to nullify the power of all elemental attributes, particularly those magical in nature, and making it impossible to cast any further spells, in an area around him. This gives him an overwhelming advantage against enemies using magic. It can also obstruct special abilities like other cheat-like ability that is related to the attributes.[1]
Weaknesses
- Mage Masher doesn’t work on magic that occurs inside the bodies of living creatures.[4]
- Mage Masher also doesn’t work on Unarmed Fighting Technique Martial Skills and No-attribute Spell.[7]
- Before reincarnating into Lambda, Rodcorte altered Mage Masher so that it would not work on other reincarnated individuals other than Vandalieu.[8]
Trivia
- Asagi appears briefly in the prologue of the web novel.[9]
- After reincarnating into Lambda, the way Asagi's name is written was changed from kanji to katakana, changing the name order to first name, surname order; i.e Minami Asagi to Asagi Minami.[?]
- He has the running gag of making situations nearly worse than previously with his one-track bias mind. In a way, Asagi is a degraded version of bias idealist Bellwood.[?]
