Mictlan is one of several afterlife dimensions known collectively as the Underworld. It is the home of the souls of the dead who believed in Mesoamerican gods.^[1]

The ruling god of Mictlan is Mictlantecuhtli, whose name appropriately means "Lord of Mictlan"; he is also in charge of carrying the souls of the recently deceased there.^[2] The gate to Mictlan is guarded by the minor god/demon Xolotl.^[3]
