Empty Hand

The END will come when I decree.
Empty Hand src

The Empty Hand is a mind-shatteringly powerful entity that commands the fifth-dimensional creatures known as The Gentry. It's actually the right hand of the Great Darkness that became sentient after the truce between the Darkness and God.

The New 52

It constructed the inhabitants of Earth 42 in order to test-run its plans of domination on them. It has made its base in the ruins of Earth 7, already destroyed at its behest, to construct the Oblivion Machine and end the never-ending tale of the super-heroes once and for all. Confronted by Superman of Earth 23 and several other heroes, it informed them that it would soon strike with legions at its command, and informed them it already destroyed "Multiverse-2" before banishing them back to Earth 8 so that it could complete its plans; they, in turn, formed Justice Incarnate and warned the heroes of 50 worlds in order to prepare against it.[1]

Infinite Frontier

After Earth 0 Barry Allen fell on the Pre-Crisis version of the Antimatter Universe, Kell Mossa/Pariah told him that the so-called Multiverse-2 was in fact the Pre-Crisis iteration of the Multiverse; he also revealed to the speedster that the Empty Hand and the Gentry did not destroy it, but they had been feeding on this dead Multiverse since its destruction in the first Crisis.[2]

It was later revealed that the Empty Hand is actually the right hand of the Great Darkness itself that was once used by the aforementioned primordial entity to form the truce between itself and The Presence, with the hand in question being given its current form.[3]

The Empty Hand would later be recruited to the Dark Army, lead by Pariah and would fight the Justice League.[4]

The Darkness' forces invaded the Multiverse, and Justice League Incarnate and the Justice League of Earth 0 tracked the origin point of the invasion to the ruins of the pre-Crisis Multiverse. Doctor Multiverse teleported the teams to Multiverse-2 where Pariah was modifying his antimatter chamber from the first Crisis to allow the Darkness to enter reality.

The heroes attempted to reason with Pariah but he refused to listen and summoned the Empty Hand and the other villains. However, Green Arrow was able to destroy the chamber, cutting the Darkness' link to reality and causing the rest of the Darkness' forces to dissipate.[5]

The Empty Hand and the rest of the Dark Army later invaded Earth 0.[6] The heroes managed to banish Pariah to a pocket universe but the Dark Army remained possessed as the corrupted Darkness transferred to Deathstroke.[7] Black Adam used his lightning again to purge the Darkness from Deathstroke, freeing the possessed villains.[8]

  • Anti-Death Equation: A power that twists and disfigures the fabric of reality,[9] it can revive deceased individuals and corrode living ones in a process called "Gentrification".[10]

  • The Empty Hand has on its face the symbol of Ultra Comics, suggesting a possible connection between the two entities.
