Earth 7

Reality names were reused several times. See also Earth-7, Earth-Seven.

Earth 7 is one of the worlds of the Multiverse in the New 52.

History

Earth 7 was a thriving world with a booming metahuman population, one with heroes noticeably similar to those of Earth 8, which was no coincidence given that Earth 7 was a recreation of Earth 8. Earth 7 was the first universe targeted by The Gentry, who disabled the laws of physics and killed billions, human and superhuman alike; the sole survivor was the weather god Thunderer. The ruined corpse of this universe became the lair of The Empty Hand and The Gentry, its deceased heroes were zombified and sent out to battle the other heroes of the Multiverse, while the Gentry built an Oblivion Machine on the ruins of that universe's Earth.

It was eventually revealed that the Oblivion Machine is actually Earth 7 itself which is now modified by the Empty Hand and the Gentry to serve as a doomsday weapon for them to utilize as part of their sinister plans to erase the wish that Superman had made with the Miracle Machine during the Final Crisis. To prevent the Great Darkness invading the multiverse, Thunderer destroyed the planet, removing any hope that his homeworld could be restored.

Notes

  • Earth 7 is an analogue for Marvel Comics, specifically Ultimate Marvel; the resurrection of its heroes as zombies is reminiscent of Marvel Zombies, which first appeared in the Ultimate Marvel universe. The unfortunate fate of Earth 7 is likely a reference to the fate of Ultimate Marvel, which suffered a heavy decline after its Ultimatum event killed off many of its characters, and ended altogether in the 2015 "Secret Wars" storyline. Grant Morrison later confirmed that what happened to Earth 7 was intended to be a reference to Jeph Loeb and David Finch's Ultimatum series.[2]
  • Despite the number of characters similar to those of Marvel, several deceased super-beings in this universe seem to resemble those of the Prime Earth. It also seems to possess analogues of heroes from other companies, such as Hellboy pastiche Devilfist.
  • The adventures of this Earth were published on the other worlds of the Multiverse under the Essential Major Comics banner; its destruction at the hands of the Gentry was recorded as "Essential Genocide Crossover".
  • Grant Morrison's Multiversity Annotations confirmed that the other two members of the Future Family were named Ghost Girl and Fireball, analogues to Invisible Woman and Human Torch, respectively.[2]
  • In a possible future from Hypertime, Earth 7 was restored to its original state and invaded Earth 42.[3]

Trivia

  • Earth 7 is opposite Earth 22 in the structure of the Multiverse.
  • Earth 7 is one half of the "M***** Binary" in the local Multiverse with Earth 6.
  • Morrison regretted not knowing or remembering about other established Marvel pastiches at the time of writing Multiversity, such as Tin Man, Americommando, and The Maximums. In particular, Morrison regretted not using the Maximums for the fallen heroes of Earth 7, as it would be a reference to Jeph Loeb's involvement with both the Maximums and Ultimatum.[2]
