Billy Batson is a teenager who becomes Captain Marvel or Shazam, the world's mightiest mortal. Granted access to incredible powers by the Wizard Shazam, he speaks the wizard's name and is struck by a lightning bolt that gives him the powers of the gods. His sister Mary becomes Mary Marvel, and his best friend Freddy is Captain Marvel, Jr.. In his civilian identity he is a young man working at WHIZ Radio in Fawcett City. During the Dawn of DC, Billy eventually stopped using the "Shazam" name, instead going by The Captain. He has been a member of the Justice League, Justice Society, Marvel Family and Squadron of Justice.
Billy Batson was created by C.C. Beck and Bill Parker for publication in Fawcett Comics, first appearing in Whiz Comics #2 (1940).
