2016

2016 is the year of Rebirth. Five years after the New 52, DC reevaluates its titles and undos some of the more controversial and drastic changes. It's revealed that Watchmen's Doctor Manhattan had taken ten years from the timeline, and those events come back into play.

The redhead Wally West is reintroduced, existing alongside the other Wallace. He was trapped in the Speed Force and his existence was erased from everyone's memories. Superman is unceremoniously killed off in The Final Days of Superman (and Lois Lane in Superwoman (Volume 1)) paving the way for the older Lois and Clark - survivors from Convergence - to take their place, along with their son Jon as a new Superboy. Mister Mxyzptlk merges their history in Superman: Reborn, which sets a new continuity for Superman that sees elements of Prime Earth and New Earth combined, with no one realizing it was ever any different. Wonder Woman learns that most of Wonder Woman (Volume 4) was an elaborate illusion created to keep her away from Paradise Island. While some of the more controversial elements of Azzarello's run are retconned out, she is still the daughter of Zeus. Batman stays Batman. Nothing ever changes.

The second movie of the DC Extended Universe, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, introduces Batman and, for the first time on the big screen, Wonder Woman. The movie, which sees Zack Snyder and David Goyer return with the dark style of Man of Steel, disappoints at the box office and the critics.
