The Fly (unofficial name) is a recurring enemy in the Contra series.
Description
A tiny fly usually appearing alongside an alien boss and very commonly in massive quantity swarms. These tiny flies are common fodder to be easily disposed of and only serve to distract the heroes from their main target. They still pose a threat with their contact damage.
It is unknown if they bear any relation to the Gigafly, another (and larger) commonly recurring alien fly creature. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, there is a possibility these small flies are an infant variant of the Gigafly.
Appearances
Contra III: The Alien Wars
Small flies are summoned alongside Grubs, from hives grown on the top of Taka's body. Two simultaneous sets of multiple flies fly generally straight in parallel diagonal angles toward the left of the area until they disappear off screen. Their spawning is infinite and can be halted indefinitely if the hive is destroyed. This task is impossible in Hard mode however due to the hive being indestructible, meaning the heroes must deal with an infinite number of Fly spawns until the beast itself is destroyed (who takes its hive with it to the grave).
Neither flies nor Grubs appear in the Game Boy version of the game: Contra: The Alien Wars. Both reappear alongside Taka in the console game's Game Boy Advance port Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX.
Contra: Hard Corps
Small flies are summoned by a large appendage of the Alien Cell during its residence inside an armed missile. They slowly move toward the missile in an attempt to harm the heroes. All are destroyed once the appendage is destroyed.
Contra: Shattered Soldier
Like in Contra III, these small flies are summoned by Taka, who appears directly after a section swarming with Gigaflies. The small flies here behave similar but now they also rapidly move vertically with their movement, increasing the chance of fatally hitting a hero. Their hive appears above Taka's back separate from the Grub hive. During Taka's second phase, small flies are summoned from the beast's nose simultaneously as the Grubs. As an infinitely spawning enemy, they produce no Hit Rate.
Neo Contra
Known as a Gegevermin (ゲゲヴァーミン).[2] Flies are spawned from Gegebonne the Sacrophagous Head. They try to fly toward or around heroes in a decent speed and swarm. Their appearance combined with their sound effect gives them a bee or wasp like appearance with menacing red eyes. Their small size can make it difficult to dispatch them without the use of spread, large, great coverage, or good aiming type weaponry. They add no hit rate, and when Gegebonne is destroyed, so do all the bees summoned.
Contra: Rogue Corps
While not appearing as a specific enemy, several insects make a minor appearance during Gentleman's Finishing Move. Gentleman impales the gold Fiend's mouth with his "tongue", then the Fiend soon inflates and explodes. As the Fiend explodes, several fly-like insects can be seen escaping from the exploded body, eventually disappearing from view. The connection to Gentleman and these fly-like insects may be a possible reference to how Taka would spew both flies and Grubs during its boss battles (the latter creature is what Gentleman appears to resemble, if not being from the same species).
Within the same game exists several Insect Guns that fire fly-like bullets. This makes one of the few weapons in the Contra series to fire living ammunition.
