The Gurus (Japanese: 賢者 Kenja "Sages") were three characters that appear in Chrono Trigger. They lived during Antiquity, served as wise men and advisers to Queen Zeal, and were among the few Enlightened Ones who did not look down on the Earthbound Ones.
Storyline
When the Mammon Machine was activated, the three Gurus were sent to three different time eras by the portal that was opened as a result. Belthasar was sent into the Future, Gaspar was sent to the End of Time, and Melchior was sent to the Present. All three of them play a supporting role in aiding Crono, Marle, Lucca, Robo, Frog, Ayla, and Magus in stopping Lavos from destroying the world.
Melchior

The first Guru encountered, the Guru of Life, is Melchior. He makes his initial appearance in Leene Square as a weapons merchant. Melchior asks Crono to convince Marle to sell her pendant to him. If Crono agrees, it will be used as evidence against him in the trial for Marle's alleged kidnapping. Here, he sells weapons such as the Crimson Blade. When talked to later on, he will invite Crono and the party to come visit him. Later, in the Middle Ages, the party obtains the broken pieces of the legendary Masamune that can only be repaired by its creator. Taking the Broken Blade and Broken Hilt to Melchior's Cabin, they learn that the Dreamstone is needed to repair it. When they return from Prehistory with the Dreamstone, Melchior repairs the sword with help from Lucca or Robo. Later, in the Antiquity altered by Magus' interference, the party rescues Melchior from his exile on the Mountain of Woe for opposing Queen Zeal's plans. He is also part of several sidequests, and will craft some of the best equipment in the game.

The second Guru, the Guru of Reason, is Belthasar. He can be spoken to briefly in Keeper's Dome when the party travels to 2300 AD to escape the Chancellor. There, he is accompanied by a Nu that he is programming. He boasts of having created the Blackbird and Ocean Palace, and warns the party against visiting Death Peak until later on. After Schala seals the Gate to Zeal, the player returns to Keeper's Dome, searching for the Wings of Time. Belthasar is no longer present here; it is implied from his Nu and from the Shines past the Sealed Door that he has perished in this Timeline. He uploaded his mind into his Robotic Nu creation, who puts the seats into the Epoch and gives a brief tutorial on how to pilot time with it.
Gaspar

The third and last Guru, the Guru of Time, is Gaspar. He is met at the End of Time, where he takes vigil against a lamp post and greets new time-travelers. Periodically, he offers advice to Crono and his friends. At the end of the game, he provides them with the Time Egg.
Name Etymology
The three Gurus get their English names from the traditional names given to the Magi who brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus in the Christian tradition.
