Benji is a researcher found driving around the desert ruins of Sandpolis during the night but is found inside his house during the daytime. When first speaking to him at night, when he is wandering around the ruins, Benji will explain that he had lost a Fountain Pen and had looked everywhere for it. The Fountain Pen is rather important to him, but he is too busy to go find it. Benji believes that he had lost it within the ruins somewhere.

If the protagonist talks to him during the day when he is in his house, Benji will apologize for not being able to have time to talk to the protagonist. He explains to the protagonist that they should come back at night when he will be found roaming about, doing research at the ruins and looking for his lost Fountain Pen.

After finding Benji's Fountain Pen on top of the ruins temple that is furthest west, the protagonist may visit Benji during the night time to return his Fountain Pen. Afterwards, this will complete and award Stamp 39. Benji will also provide the protagonist with the Chicken Horn as a reward.

Benji is one of the many recruitable teammates available within Sandpolis. In order to recruit him, one must complete Stamp 39. The other requirement is that one must beat him in Desert Raceway. Afterwards, he can be recruited to the team. It is noted that he will be in his house from now on in order to recruit him.

Trivia

• Benji can be found at night wandering around the ruins, outside of his house. During the day, he is inside of his house. When the time changes from night to day or day to night, he will remain either in the house or outside the entire time until you either warp away, or travel out of the render distance.

• After completing Stamp 39, he can only be found inside his house during all times of the day. He will not respawn outside at night.

• When racing, if you pause the race and look at the current results, Benji's residency is listed as 'Ruins' instead of Sandpolis. The reason can be assumed that it is because of he lives rather far away from Sandpolis.

• Benji's actual house does not need to be visited to obtain any stamp in the game, making it among the small list of seven buildings (excluding Quick-Pic Shops) that do not contribute to any city's "Visit all houses" stamps.
• Furthermore, it is among the even smaller number of two buildings that do not directly contribute to any stamps at all (the other being the Temple Under the Sea)!

• The quote: "Oh, it's you. I'll do my best in the next race! I want to impress you!", is provided when declining Benji as a teammate but also appear when talking to him when he is on your team. Clearly, this is a production mistake.
