Monkey Pirates is an upgrade for the Monkey Buccaneer, first released in BTD5 Generation. It is characterized by gaining an activated ability that allows the upgraded pirate ship to pull down the strongest small MOAB-class bloon with a hook. In the BTD5 Generation, the hook is the only added feature compared to Cannon Ship despite the extra cannons. In the Bloons TD 6 Generation, the bombs, plus the grape attacks in Bloons TD 6, gain extra damage and shoot three bombs in an angular spray.
The Monkey Pirates upgrade in both the Bloons TD 5 Generation and Bloons TD 6 Generation games follow along the upgrade path that introduces additional weapons and emphasizes a 1800's Caribbean-style pirate theme as the Buccaneer gets further upgraded. In the BTD6 Generation, the Crow's Nest upgrade is omitted along the path, and is replaced with an upgrade to the Grape Shot upgrade that adds fire to the grapes, Hot Shot.
