When he persists, Yuno stops him and he the other orphans living at the church criticize Asta while pointing out his lack of magic, something that is completely unheard of. Asta tries to show off his skills through physical efforts, but Yuno, who possesses an extraordinary amount of magic power and talent, outshines him. Both Asta and Yuno aim to become part of the Magic Knights to become the Wizard King, the strongest mage in the country and leader of the Magic Knights, once they are able to obtain a grimoire, magic books that greatly enhance their owner's magical abilities. Despite many having doubts about him, Asta leaves to train his body every day to compensate for his lack of magical talent, until he can get his grimoire, which he thinks will finally allow him to use magic.

Despite not getting a grimoire, Asta remains resolute and challenges Yuno to the title of Wizard King, but Yuno ignores him.

After the ceremony, Asta processes his failure to get a grimoire, but remains determined to get one no matter how long it takes. He vows that he will become the Wizard King so he can prove that anyone can achieve greatness, even an orphaned commoner. Meanwhile the two nobles ambush Yuno outside the tower to get revenge for upstaging them, but Yuno overpowers them. Suddenly, all three are ambushed by Revchi Salik, a former Magic Knight turned bandit, who captures them with his magic sealing chains and steals Yuno's grimoire. Yuno points out that a grimoire can only be used by their chosen owners, but Revchi reveals he plans to sell it, and he considers taking Yuno's pendant as well. When Asta refuses to give up, Revchi reveals his chains can measure a person's magic power and that Asta doesn't and never will have any magic. Revchi scorns and mocks Asta and pushes him to the verge of despair, but Yuno tells off Revchi and declares that he is his rival. Motivated by this acknowledgment, Asta regains the will to fight, which summons a tattered grimoire with five leaves from the tower. The grimoire releases a large black sword and Revchi is stunned by its arrival. It is then revealed that the first three leaves of grimoire's clover represent integrity, hope, and love, the four leaf represents good luck, and in the fifth lives a devil.
